Omega LED Magnet

Post20 Mar 2012, 09:24

Hi.
A friend of mine is listing this Omega magnet, and I told him I'd mention it on the forum:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Omega-P ... 4cff8c6b35

I suggested to him that the rod associated with these Omega magnets was probably intended to help the magnet maintain its magnetism. Does anyone have any theories about this rod, or better still know for sure what it's for ?

Rgds,
Andrew.

Yes this rod shortcuts the magnetic field and helps to preserve the magnets strength. Works even better if you take another magnet instead of the rod. The auction picture shows the early "horseshoe" version.
~ 15 years ago I purchased a box of 10 magnets straight from Omegas spare parts department. It is still full as like to collect such acessories too ;-) Just took a snapshot:

Technically, the little rod is called a "keeper", as it keeps the magnet from losing its' strength (or even being overcharged) by exposure to external fields. A few loose ones of these showed up on ebay a few months ago; I bought a couple to go along with my 18K TC1...completes the package nicely. BTW, the standard Pulsar P2/3 magnets work just fine with the Omegas (Hamiltons, too).
