DSM LCD

Post25 Jan 2009, 03:05

Did anyone else see this:

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll ... :IT&ih=011

From what I can tell, it appears to be an early DSM LCD........not 100% sure though from the photos. If it is, it looks like it might still have a good display.

I didn't know enough about them to bid any higher, so I missed it. I've never heard of Seth Thomas either. I am guessing it's a shop in the US which sells luxury goods ?
The scandalous shipping price to Australia (US$43) also put me off.

Rgds,
Andrew.

andrew, seth thomas is the name of the founder of a very well known clockmaking co in the early 1800's here in the usa. that company lasted into the 1950's and then began using german made movements, lasting into the 1990's. now it is just a name owned by someone seeking to capitalize on the reputation. they did market lcd's in the 1980's but they had nothing to do with making them. i had an early gruen telesonic lcd in the early to mid 1970's. it was stem set with hr & min only. wish i still had it. not sure what the display type was. also not sure how much gruen had to do with its manufacture, but i had problems early on and sent it to gruen in n.y. for repair. peter

Yes, definitely DSM. Looks like the Jules Jurgensen Optcom I. Hard to tell if it works, you can't judge DSMs in their off-state, defective ones look like working ones - at least those that I've seen.

Seth Thomas used the Gruen teletime/Westclox Quartzmatic/American Microsystems modules in their early field effect watches (same module different names) so I'd guess they also used the same source for their for their DSM watches.

There's also a very similar DSM Quartzmatic under lcd watches on Peter Wenzigs Magic Digitals web site.

http://www.digitalwatches.de

It has the same button configuration so I'd say it's pretty likely that the Seth Thomas watch has the same module in it.

I had a bid on it myself but didn't go beserk as I've had lousy luck with none tested DSMs in the past . If it's working or fixable then I reckon someone on here got a bargain (but it's a total lottery with those pics).
