: GP LED Watch Or Is It?

Post23 Aug 2010, 02:26

Seems like one of these showed up some time back [maybe the same one?], and a huge debate erupted about whether this was, in fact, a Gerard-Perregaux product. I'm not certain if the topic was resolved, but the consensus was that it wasn't [or if it was, it shouldn't have been]. As a yung'un, I was taught that the Casquette was GP's only entry into the LED field...

I remember that debate but this is a different style to the previous one discussed, the previous watch was the same as the one on Peter Wenzig's site; maybe even the same one. Out of the two I'd say this one is the more dubious and the most ugly :~#

More likely to be a George(s) Portinoux- a cheapo Hong Kong sourced brand sold by numerous mail order sellers in UK/Europe back in the mid 70s. Girard Perregaux would have almost certainly marked the back & module (practically all good quality Swiss watches are "triple signed" which conventionally means dial, back and movement or in electronic watches dial, back & module).

An interesting piece...the seller claims 17 jewels, unadjusted.

My vote is for fake..

Actually, it says:
0 Jewels
unadjusted
gold plated band
17 Jewels Swiss
seventeen Unadjusted

So you can chose... Unadjusted is most likely true. 1 jewel if you count the quartz...

@ Old Tom: I've never seen a George(s) Portinoux (and can't find anything on the net), but if they actually existed it is far more likely that this watch (and all the other non-casquette GPs) is of this brand.
The GP logo on this watch looks wrong. AFAIK GP never used a logo with intersected G and P.
Unless anyone proves different I believe this is anything but a Girard Perregaux. The pity is, asking GP probably won't help - the even deny the Casquette.... idiots.

The watch on Peter Wenzig's site also has the intersected G and P logo, http://www.digitalwatches.de/DEUTSCH_LED_UHREN2.htm it would be interesting to know if GP did produce more than just the one LED watch, according to this site they made several :-?

No I don't always believe everything I read on the net but it does make me wonder!

You're familiar with the big label on the back popularized by the Levi brand, right?

So, this new brand would be called "denial" And the labeled size would actually four sizes smaller than actual...

The size label would prominently display a "2" even though the woman was actually a size "6".

I'm a married man with multiple women in the house.... and I'd make $$$ on this kind of BS.

Regards, Jeff

You could also make the label 3ft square to hide the fat ass behind.

Errors abound, most are well intentioned. Take the Wells watch two items below the GP on Dr. Wenzig's site - that is described wrong - Well was owned by Benrus, but Texas INstruments DID make the movements for the Wells and the Benrus po-up driver. Well was a manufacturer of fashion jewelery before Benrus acquired them in the late '60s.

Gross, just, gross. :~# Mick, you should be punished for crimes aginst humanity. That reminds me of a lady a friend(fireman) had to help remove from her house - she had a pork chop bone between one of her rolls and an entire small bag of potato chips between another. And not a clue they were there.

I was thinking something more like this....looks a lot like the missus from that angle. 8-)

I did notice this watch a few days ago, and having been musing over it ever since.
After viewing peter wenzigs non drivers Girard Perregaux led watch
of which there can be little doubt that it is indeed a Girard Perregaux watch. i checked this ebay item for the same signs.

1. initials GP on inside of case back

( the design is all consistent with the overlapping letters on peters watch and the Girard Perregaux box packaging )

2. command button position ( not super rare but not common)

3. Girard-Perregaux full name branded on the back case

4. logo GP on front crystal

(all of which i confirmed with the seller )

So all of these characteristics have led me to belive this is indeed a very rare Girard-Perregaux led watch.
Girard-Perregaux it now seems did retail other led watches other than the known driver led range.
so much so in my belief that this particular ebay item is a rare unknown Girard-Perregaux led watch. i have placed a offer on the watch and the seller has excepted it.

once it arrives i will take further pictures to confirm its legitimacy
if its not than .......

SHIT !!!

worth a try..lol

The watch on Dr Wenzig's site has GP stamped on the module it would be interesting to know if this module is also stamped GP.

Ah, so you were the one who took the plunge for US$ 250 ;-)
I was in contact with the seller too and he told me I'd have to hurry if I want it because there was "someone from another country" - but it was too late. Anyway, I didn't actually have any interest in it, just asked for curiosity.

Peter Wenzig's pictures (especially the intersected GP logo on the box) have convinced me that at least the watch depicted there IS a GP. Why hadn't I seen this before??

Hi all

just a update for anyone interested.lol
i did recieve the Girard Perregaux led non drivers watch
and to my relief it appears to be a actual GP led watch
i shall upload pictures asap,
the case is hard stamped Girard Perregaux
(inside the case is signed GP with a serial number)
on the front crystal it has the known GP intials design.
the module isnt marked, however the led display is identical to
another known GP non drivers led watch
(yes its fully working)
pictures to follow.

Made me want to sniff the screen... 8-)

I hope the GP is legit for your sake FUnkyguy, but I'm not holding out a lot of hope. There is something unsettling at the thought of GP putting out such a cheap looking round-faced watch.
