I've seen this watch before, but with a DSM (Dynamic Scattering Mode, white digits on mirrored/black background) LCD module inside, identical with the very first LCD watch (BWC/Optel).

Your's appears to be a later FE (Field Effect) LCD.
Can you post a picture of the module? Maybe someone simply changed the LCD panel (don't know for sure if this would work). If it has the original DSM module, it's quite valuable and collectible.

That's a really lovely watch. The DSM and field effect displays aren't interchangable so it's a third generation stem set lcd module in there (it's probably very similar to the one in the Kuatron lcd that Azimuth posted in the for sale section a while back with excellent pictures).

From what I can gather from reading up on it and my own collection the Optel modules went.

1) Stem set DSM. One function, round module (BWC, Delvina etc)
2) Stem set DSM, One function, rectangular module (Optcom 1, Walchron etc)
3) Stem set LCD, both round and rectangular module (Segtronic etc)
4) Back set LCD, round module (Sandoz etc)
5) Several generations of plastic based modules with pusher command and setting buttons (digitaire, spectra etc)

The first three are the most collectable so it'll make good money should you decide to sell it. Where did you find it? - I'll be gutted if it slipped under my radar on ebay :-D

You'll probably get the best deal putting it on ebay with good pics, a starting price that you'll be happy with and no "buy it now". It's difficult to say what it would make. At a guess I'd say somewhere between 100 - 200 pounds. Maybe more if a couple of people get snipe happy ;-) .

I tend to avoid trades as there's way too much potential for hassle with vintage digital watch swapping.

Interesting - I have pictures of 3 Kuatron/Lucien Piccard watches, the modules look exactly like yours, but all 3 are DSM.

BTW your's is very early, the chip was manufactured in 1973, week 47.

Great pics of the module here courtesy of Piotr:

These modules may look the same as the DSM ones but but the display drive voltages are different. DSM displays require 15 volts wheras the field effect displays need 7.5 volts. Also the early dsm displays flash on and off to count the seconds. I guess they kept things as similar as possible with the change over from DSM to FE so as to use up existing parts and cases.

These round ones use 355 batteries so you have to fiddle with spacers to get them running. Fab watches!
