Casio 'Blue Thunder' Digital Watch (Module 103)

Post11 Sep 2008, 17:47

Anyone who is interested in vintage lcd watches will have heard of this watch but there seem to be many incarnations of it.

I purchased one of these watches when they were first issued over 25 years ago and Im positive it was an A202 model but having trawled around the internet the only vesions I can find any information about are :

AA85
AA86
A201

My original got stolen and I managed to pick up another Mod103 (cant remember which model it was but the face was very similar to the A202(?) that got stolen) from a secondhand shop but it had an octagonal case instead of the original round one that got stolen. I subsequently lost this replacement and have been searching for another one ever since.

There have been offers on ebay, but some of the prices are just stupid due to 'collectors' - I want one because I love the watch and want to wear/use it. I have managed to finally get hold of an A201 model for the sum of £35 from a seller on ebay, but it appears there may be some malfunction with it - hopefully not. This is the one that resembles the original watch that I purchased.

Does anyone have any real information on these watches. I mean which came first? The AA85, AA86 or the A201/202?

These watches are infamous for their use in the movies:
Blue Thunder
48 Hours
Back To The Future

Anyone who has one to sell for a REASONABLE price, please PM or email me.

I haven't - but IMHO for LCD watches, vintage means before 1980 - especially for Casios, as there hasn't been any significant change since then ;-)
[says a Casio ignorant, and now I duck and run ;-)]

Can you post a picture?

CASIO AA85

I think this is the model which was used in Blue Thunder. Im not sure which models were used in the other films.

All of these watches are based on the Module 103 and therefore its just the cases that are different (I assume)

I have managed to find the manual for the Module 103 at http://www.casiodigitalwatches.com/manuals.htm

and it appears that there was also a model AA81, but it appears this may be another name for the A201. Therefore, and Im just assuming here that the 81,85 and 86 are the years on manufacture/issue), I may be correct about the A201 being the first issue of this watch type.

The image links you posted don't work (for me). They point to the PCS site but even though I'm logged in there the pictures don't show up :-(
