Very early Orient LCD

Post11 Nov 2015, 15:06

I took a bit of a gamble.

It arrived today. Dropped in a 357 and it even works!
The leaking lcd display looks the same as the perfect lcd display from another dead lcd orient I've got. Modules are different though.

The newly arrived module has an extra green circuit and very big quartz crystal.
Note the two metal boxes on the ceramic circuit, those are large switches for setting the watch!

But will it work?

Yes :)

(big scratches in the crystal :( )

Very thick case, brushed finish still intact :)

Nice original bracelet and clasp.

It's very sad the other movement died, but this is a nice way to use it as a donor :)

Some watches, simply are not made to last
Seiko watches are designed to withstand the ravages of both time and fashion
Someday perhaps, all watches will be made this way

The one with the extra PCB is the first Orient Digital watch, cal 62000 from 1974. The other one with the single PCB is a 66000 / 66100 which replaced it (I think in 1975...). The 66000 was obviously popular as it was sold for a couple of years alongside the six digit LCD 64100 which was released about the same time.

Could the original glass be restored or at least improved using Cerium Oxide powder?

Thank you for the replies and all the extra information! Very cool I've got the first Orient lcd watch :)
I'll look at the auction, If I manage to get it, I'll probably end up repairing it and then I'll have two watches...

About the cerium oxide, that will probably work, I'll have to learn how to do it sometime, with other "junk" crystals of course :grin1:
