New member. Help with info on watches please.

Post22 Dec 2016, 19:23

Hi there. Thanks for the add to the forum. I've used it for a while and found it a great source of information.

I have been collecting digitals for a while, mainly just buying what I like.

I have a few that I know little about so I thought I'd ask.

The first one is made by 'RJW'. Not been able to find out much about it.

Or this NOS Piratron.

Any ideas?

Kind regard,
Steve.

ps Please let me know if those links worked ok?

Hi Stephen

Afraid I'm a lapsed member but calling in again for old times sake (ouch poor pun)..

Links work fine. The second is a facsimile of the famous Seiko 'Pan-Am' world time watch of course, The first looks like a fairly generic Hong Kong watch of the early 80s. My personal 'acid test' is if the case is 'All stainless' not just the case back. If yes then it's a keeper..

Got to go with James,

All stainless steel are so easy to refinish. Don't go for plated unless a special movement such as the Casio scientific calculator watches.

Thanks guys, the RJW is pretty good quality and is stainless throughout.
The Piratron is only plated but it's fun. Love that new/old watch feel.

Another cheapy (£4) that I have a soft spot for. It was ditched when I got it and needed a lot of cleaning. The 'crystal' was polished and the case cleaned. After I replaced the battery it very slowly woke up. It took ages. After a few hours the segments were nice and dark and it keeps brilliant time. No idea how the solar panals work. They may even be fake. No idea who made it. The module has USA on it.
