Junghans Mega 1 complete collection (hires images)

Post04 Sep 2007, 00:26

Last week I finally managed to complete my Mega 1 digital collection :-D, that is all 5 variants in like-new condition with the correct strap. (Now what is next? ;-)).

Image
The 5 variants from left to right:
026/0010.00: matt chrome case, black leather strap with white stitching, flat crystal
026/0011.00: polished chrome PVD coated case, marbled brown leather strap with brown stitching, curved crystal
026/0012.00: matt titanium look PVD coated case, smooth brown leather strap with white stitching, flat crystal
026/0014.00: polished black PVD coated case, smooth black leather strap with black stitching, curved crystal
026/0013.00: matt black PVD coated case, black leather strap with black stitching, curved crystal

Different lighting:

Different view:

On the right: Mega 1000 (026/4502.44)
2nd from the right: another 026/0013.00 - note that despite its different appearance, it is the same model as the one left to it! It looks more reflective, perhaps because it has seen quite some wear. The (new) strap is not correct, it is for a 026/0014.

Comparison of the two 026/0013.00:

Mega 1 brochure from 1990:

Final note: the ".00" in the type number means leather strap, ".44" means metal. This is true for all Junghans watches. I learnt this from the guy where I got the last Mega 1.

Not so fast - Doesn't that mega 1000 come with a leather strap as well ;-)

Excellent collection!

Yes, even in 2 different straps, to be exact ;-)
This makes 3 variants of the original Mega 1000:
- 026/4500.00 (smooth leather strap, positive LCD)
- 026/4501.00 (coarse leather strap, negative LCD), and
- 026/4502.44 (steel bracelet, negative LCD).
Plus the 4 variants of the "2nd edition" with sapphire crystal:
- 026/4510.00 (leather, positive)
- 026/4511.00 (leather, negative)
- 026/4512.44 (steel, negative)
- 026/4513.44 (steel, positive)
Fortunately, the Mega 1000 is not collectible (yet ;-)) - it's nothing but a well-designed rather expensive timepiece, whereas the Mega 1 was the world's first radio-controlled wristwatch.

On http://www.scienceandsociety.co.uk (search "Mega 1") there are 2 images of a Mega 1 that AFAIK was never sold in this form:

I too had a complete collection of the five versions of the Junghans Mega 1 - all new/unused but all gone now. The only one I have left is 'well used' example bought in a Berlin flea market in 2001 - great for setting the time of my other watches.

I still have a spring 1996 Junghans brochure which features the Mega 1. By 1996 the 026/0012 version was no longer illustrated in the main section but in the replacement strap section only.

There is also a 6th colour version illustrated in the strap section but I have been advised by the factory that this version was never put into production.

Each colour version had its own special strap which was available in short, standard and long.

In this 1996 catalogue the clasps are all marked Junghans.

I have the code numbers for the straps and clasps if anyone wants them.

Can you tell us more about this one? What did it look like? Recently, a gold coloured Mega 1 was auctioned, but the seller pulled the auction when he realized how rare a piece he had.

The watch that is illustrated in the brochure looks to be a matt dark grey and the fax I received from the factory (5/7/2001) called it grey - but the pic is very small. They also advised that at that date there were no complete watches or cases left at the factory.

They also confirmed that other than the five models listed below no other colours produced so the gold one must have been a prototype.

Thanks for posting the reference numbers :-)

That watch had been given by Junghans as a present to a man who had done some design work for them. Yes, it must have been a prototype or from a small test batch or whatever - rare anyway.

So what is wrong with this Junghans Mega 1.
It says 026/0012 on the back suggesting it is the
matt titanium look PVD coated case, smooth brown leather strap with white stitching, flat crystal version.
Yet it has the crystal of an 026/0011?

Maybe the crystal was replaced. I asked the seller.

Yes, considering he has worn it only 5 or 6 times.
And he has no box, i asked the seller.
It probably had it's crystal replaced before it's current owner bought it.

Seller's answer: yes, the crystal has been replaced some years ago because the orignal one had a scratch.
