Diesel OLED watch DZ7080, DZ7079

Post22 Sep 2007, 17:43

This watch has drawn some attention in other threads, now it seems to be available:

Shop in Germany:
Uhrcenter DZ7080
Uhrcenter DZ7079

Leather or stainless? Hm, difficult....
I have to say that on the original image it looked a bit better:

It's cool looking and I would like to see it up close but I think it has too much of an industrial look to it, IMO; and it's not just the hokey looking rivets. :)

Ah it's a Diesel - I was looking for Fossil Doh! It's very nice to look at but it's 199 Euros - 136 quid or so in Germany and $215 (much cheaper!) in the States. Still a bit pricey which is a real pity - One to keep an eye on as surely prices will fall next spring ? One of the US websites stated that the pictures may be photoshopped which didn't really inspire confidence in their products. Still it appeals to me far more than a Bulova or Mido sideview and leaves the Adidas far behind. Good find Rewolf.

Edit one of the German sites states on translation that the numbers are Royal blue so that corresponds with the original image, not the later ones.

The design reminded me of something, but I didn't know what - up to now: Urwerk!, especially the older models like "103 white gold".

Yes, it DOES look industrial, and I like the industrial look ;-) - but the steel bracelet should be more "smooth". As for now I prefer the leather strap.

I fear the display won't be very bright, and the mirrored crystal will certainly not help to improve the contrast.

Price: Diesel Watch Express (links in 1st posting) lists the the DZ7079 for $136.50 and the DZ7080 for $150.50, but they only ship to USA, Canada and UK :-(

We're really opposite on this. :-D I actually like the band and the transition it makes to the case; however, I don't like the "bar" that the band attaches to. Very ugly.

I also don't like that "bar", though I'd only call it "a bit ugly", not "very ugly". But a bit ugly is ugly enough to put me off. The bar wasn't visible on the first photo... So you see, we not as opposite as you might think :-D

I ordered one (steel bracelet). If I don't like it I can send it back without cost. In any case I'll make some photos and test the display. Hold on ;-)

I hope you didn't order the one from Germany, the $US ones have been reduced already and are now probably less than half the cost of the one in Germany :x

P.S. I love that industrial look, and I think the leather strap version looks great, I especially like that bar lol

[edit] ok I see now that you already stated the reduced prices, and said that they don't ship to Germany, oops I need to read entire thread before making comments

I did order in Germany...
It's the only way to hold the watch in hands without any cost. If I order somewhere else, I can't just return it if I don't like it. I could even return it and then ask a US/CDN/UK forum member to purchase one for me ;-)
Anyway, I've just received a message that it's out of stock until mid october :-( At least I haven't paid yet.

After looking over the watch carefully, it looks like the digits in the display are tiny in size. I can't wait to hear a review from someone who has purchased one. I think they will be disappointed. If these companies are trying to push their new OLED technology, you would think they would find a better way to do it. The Fossil OLED looks like a video game and this looks like a tiny readout in a drivers watch.

Good point, Planet-LED (ex HDLED?, nice new hompage BTW :-) )!

The german shop Uhrcenter (link above) writes that the display size is 10mm x 36mm. This is obviously the crystal's size, not the display's, as the whole watch is only 36mm wide (without the "ugly bar").

Have a close look at the DZ7079 (leather strap), look at the display window's angle within the crystal: it is not correct! But it's the same angle as in the DZ7080 photo. Obviously the time display was copied from the DZ7080 photo to the DZ7079 photo, but because the watches were photographed at slightly different angles, it doesn't fit properly.
I think both images are photoshopped, because in reality the display is mirrored (at least the description tells this), so you'd just see the lit digits behind a mirror, but not a dark frame around them.

Assuming the DZ7080 photo shows the correct proportions, the digits are about 4.0mm high.
This is also true for the partial DZ7080 photo (with the blue display): the digits cover 40% of the crystal height, that is 4mm if the crystal has 10mm.

How much is 4mm? I've just measured the digit size of the red M-2 that I'm wearing today: exactly 4mm! I haven't ever heard of any complaints about the M-2's digit size :-)
So at least the OLED digit's aren't tinier than other LED's digits.

Final note: the time and date display is said to appear in an "animated" way... No, I will definitley not buy this watch without the option to return it without cost.

Update:

http://www.dieselwatchexpress.com/index.php/action/item/id/204 says:
"This watch will be available for sale on Jan 04 2008 we are taking special orders because Diesel is making limited number of this style"

Some ebay auctions with real photos:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220157682559
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140162963321 (with OLEDs lit)

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260164948731
Looking at these photos, I like it less and less - especially because of the "ugly bar" Majestyk mentioned above.

Much better, indeed.
Is this the the M-3?
Will there also be a metal bracelet version?
When will it be ready? ;-)

I think both images are photoshopped,

Having looked at the ebay photos, definetly! It's looking uglier by the minute. Bummer. Another possible decent watch that turns out to be not so good as promised. Nice photoshopping there Jeff ;-) Go apply to Diesel as a watch designer :-P And Fossil while you're at it.

Yes I'm sure Diesel would love me to tout this watch as the Majestyk M3. :-) But to answer your question, rewolf, yes there will be a metal band and a red display version. haha

The first photos with display active that seem to be real:
http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330174294897
Looks nice (the display) - as long as the mirrored face is reflecting something black. I assume in the 2nd photo you wouldn't see anything because the mirror is reflecting white.

Yesterday I received the DZ7080 I had ordered.
I took some photos before returning it (please note that the protective foil is still on the crystal).

Here's what you see after pressing the button:
ImageImageImage

ImageImageImage
ImageImageImageImage

The OLED display is much too dim IMHO. The photos were taken under 720lux lighting (my office) - more than in a night club, but not more than on a rainy day outside. Any vintage LED watch is brighter.

The display is animated. Press any button, a cursor blinks twice, then the time scrolls in, stays for a second, then the DOW+date scrolls in, stays for a second. Short break, then it shows time and date again without scrolling. The whole animation takes about 8 s. There is no shortcut. Annoying, IMHO.
I have a video; 11sec, 22MB. If anyone wants to put it somewhere for download (youtube etc.), please PM me, I can email it.

And finally the watch comes with a 220 page multi-language instruction booklet that covers about any Diesel watch ever made, but NOT the DZ7080. Very funny.

As for me, the perfect OLED watch is still to come.

Thanks Rewolf - that is a shame. I was eyeing that model myself, I thought the case was pretty classy. :-(

Having listened to random tracks on my Sony Walkman because the OLED is unreadable on a dull day I'm truly prepared to give up on OLED. Thanks for the photos and opinion Reworf, much appreciated.

Out of curiosity, I went to the Fossil website, and was unable to find their OLED watch. It could be that they made a limited number of them and they are sold out, or they had enough negative feedback from buyers that they pulled the watches from their lineup.
