The Junghans facility in Schramberg

Post04 Nov 2007, 20:37

Yesterday I was in Schramberg (Germany, Black Forest), home of Junghans since 1861, and took some photos.
Click here for Junghans on Google Maps

Junghans factory buildings

The famous terrace building by industrial architect Philipp Jakob Manz, built 1917/1918.
Philipp Jakob Manz (1861-1936) Industriearchitekt und Unternehmer is a very interesting doctoral thesis on the architect, containing 4 pages about the Junghans building.
The building is currently vacant.

: The Junghans facility in Schramberg

A few years back (late 1990s) I was in the area and called in to try and buy a Junghans Mega 1 which had already been discontinued by then. They had a few left on the shelves but did not want to sell one watch to a casual caller but my friend, who was a native, and lived close by managed to persuade them.

However this took a while and meant I was very late for my flight home - we rang the airline to let them know I was on the way and they held the plane.

The joys of watch collecting.

The true reason we were late was that my friend got stopped by the Police for using his mobile phone (trying to ring the airline) whilst driving.

Gave the Police a made up story about how I was going to bring business the local economy (partly true) and convinced them not to fine him  .
