Seiko SBPG001

Post05 Feb 2010, 19:30

I mentioned in the New digital watch from Hamilton (40 years anniversary) thread that I thought that watch was the second recent release of a new watch based on a classic design.

The first one that I was referring to was the Seiko SBPG001 (Stainless Steel) and the SBPG003 (black finish).

The design is based on Seiko's classic late 70s/early 80s LCD watches, only it has a slightly thicker band and has been bumped up in size.

The watch is solar powered and 5-channel atomic, being able to receive time broadcasts from all the transmitters currently in existence.

The watch came out in November, 2008. More info about it here.

Wow! IMO, it's about time Sieko did this. The market is there.
How do you like it on your wrist? I assume it is EL backlit and not a bulb? I have been dreaming that Seiko would someday re-issue an updated G757.
Maybe it's not such a pipe-dream afterall??

EL backlit. It's pretty comfortable, but a bit larger and heavier than I am used to. Probably lighter than a v-tec (greek letter), heavier than a Synchronar, and definitely heavier than the original Seiko digitals.

Maybe not lighter than the kappa - I recently switched from kappa (titanium, 100g) to delta (steel, 155g) and really have to get used to the weight again.

As for the SBPG001: very nice watch :) RC + Solar = no setting, no batteries, nothing mechanical. Will run for ages without requiring any attention. Perfect.
But trying to be really picky, I'd say they should have made the central digits larger - there's enough room on that big LCD. IMHO the time display looks a bit disproportioned. And I'd prefer a clean bezel, only "SEIKO" and button descriptions (at most).

I had a Sieko watch before. I like it very much. However, it is out of order now. :(
