Of course, because Bulova brought that concept to production, while Patek considered the Cobra too expensive to produce -and it would've been so at those times-, but we can't ignore Patek's effort to create something out of the box in a decade where "digital watches" were jump hours which looked very conservative. So we can say that in 1958 the Cobra started a new trend that watch companies began to follow only twenty years later. But you know Richard, I'm biased. :-P

I'd say that on the other hand, a sort of spiritual successor of the Patek Cobra -despite it didn't feature the interesting Cobra's display concept- was the Amida Digitrend, despite it shared only the driver's styling with Patek's concept, which can be considered the only mechanical driver's watch ever made.
Always IMHO, of course. ;-)

Just stumbled across this modern Jump-hour digital and fell in love with the movement....

I just wish these watches weren't made of unobtanium though. At 150,000 Euros it's just a nice dream lol.

That's an interesting design jagmad, the first watch you posted sort of reminded me of the jet pack from the movie "The Rocketeer" lol.

The mechanical digital in your second posting looks wild. I love some of these designs, but it's a shame they cost so much.

Kasper, the Seiko dot matrix does 24hr time?? lol

I knew I should have picked one up a few years back when they were going for $100, now I'm regretting not pulling the trigger on one back then, they are very nice dress style digitals, with scrolling displays. Pretty neato for 1980 :)

My new Seiko Spirit EPD: For it's pure modern era efficiency, solar powered, atomic calibration, ease of use, and a great simple display of the time.

The Ventura wins it for me, but this Seiko also is a great watch. It's a pity that e-paper is a bit slow to refresh. It has such a real paper look that you could actually make it appear as a scroll and let it roll to the next minute, just as you would do with a scroll. The high resolution of this screen is great for some gothic font, complementing the scroll idea.

I wonder, how do these new digital watches (like the Ventura) perform outside in bright daylight? Is that still easy to read?

My V-Tec works better the brighter it is, it's still good in low light but it's great in bright light.

The reflective contrast on the Venturas and the Hamilton pulsomatic (and i suspect the Rado version) all increase in the sunlight. These are superior to standard lcd (and led displays). I find the most striking watches for wrist presence are the Hamilton Pulsomatic, and the Ventura RX,PX,and BMW Sparc models. These watches ,along with their beautiful displays are unique in the watch world. There is a huge satisfaction in hearing the occasional whir from the auto movement as it charges the watch.  8-)
The Hamilton is now discontinued,so this leaves the Ventura and Rado (with a modified Pulsomatic movement) as the only automatic digital watches in the world and that alone ,in by book makes these watches superb. :-D
The Seiko SDGA is also another superb technical beast , its display is also like no other, however its more functional than beautiful. :O`~
