Ohhh, congrats on that, certainly a fun E-ink collector's item.

I like it just for the high resolution images from the movie. The world time is cool too because it replaces the Aircraft symbol with a Tie Fighter. :mega:

If you get the chance, take some real photos of it for us to see, I think you're the first one on these forums with the Star Wars Limited Edition E-ink.

Love it, too bad they don't have Star Trek original fans in their marketing department!

Only drawback for me is no seconds display. I need a seconds display and chrongraph count up and down timer. Eink just doesn't have the refresh rate.

very nice review as always ..enjoyed it.

i really like the watch, love the style..it's looks massive, but i had to have instead of 15 pictures, 15 different ways to show the time..thats important to me with a full digital display..i want to change it
every day:-)
trow in a few different special alarm sounds and i'm totally hooked. And as a surplus i would like to have 1 very strong led so i can use it as a night light if needed.

so that would be my perfect watch. Still waiting.

Would love to see the light at night + know the weight.

My photography skills/equipment are limited to what my iPhone can do, but suffice to say the light can cast a sharp shadow on the ceiling in a dark room. It's the brightest of my watches. The weight is 138g and it wears very comfortably and doesn't snag on clothing.

Have there been any technical advances in these watches in their introduction?

For Seiko, I think the only advance has been a slightly faster refresh time on the E-ink S771 module vs. the S770 found on the first E-ink watches. The S771's also refresh the entire screen each minute instead of every 10 minutes in the S770.

The Seconds display on these Seiko E-inks is pretty neat, but I'm sort of curious how much power the display is using to show seconds for one minute. It would be awsome to have a full time running seconds E-ink display one day though.

I would be sold on one if it would display continuous seconds without actively need to charge it up daily.

Nice watch there! I have the SDGA001 and love it, I think its one of the best digital watch ever. :)

My main complain is that there is no micro adjustment hole on the clasps nor was there any half links for better size adjustment.

And then minor complain is that the display mode 2 and 4 isn't really legible, so I knida feel like they have wasted 2 "display mode slots" there.

I really hope that Seiko will do further development on the EPD series watches.

That's how I felt when I saw the reviews of the watch in those modes. In the more budget model SBPA models they greatly improved readibility with those modes.

I don't understand why they didn't go back and put the two modes pictured from the S771 module and update the S770 modules so it had a more legible display in those modes, as well as better quality sapphire and machining. Win Win situation in my opinion.

Re: Seiko SDGA005 Inbound

Post11 Dec 2013, 16:46

LOL, well, I purchased the S771. For budget reasons and the readability of all the display modes.

What I'm saying is that the style and quality may not be what some people are looking for with watches that have the S771 module in them. A lot of people seem to enjoy their S770 series, which have Sapphire anti-reflective coatings and higher quality links and machining, as well as a different style which appeals to some. But the complaint is that the two modes on the S770 isn't nearly as easily read compared to the S771's, so if I was Seiko and had to make a judgement call, I'd have the memory chip updated in the S770 module so that the two time modes with large font digits displayed the time like the S771's, while also being in a higher quality watch model, it would make both modes more useful for the customer.

In my opinion, just good customer service practice.

Also, just a heads up for all you Seiko EPD users. I found my watch was ghosting digits more than usual recently, but a simple reset of the module and setting your time back up quickly cleared any display problems and ghosting issues I was having. Most people probably wouldn't notice the ghosting anyways, but it bugged me. I also noticed my display wouldn't turn on so easily when exposed to 500lux lighting conditions, the reset also fixed this issue as well.

strange, i notice the display ghosting when its being partially refreshed. But when the whole screen refresh, there won't be any ghosting.

Would it be weather/temperature related? Or simply the watch wouldn't mind a reset once in a long while ...

I think maybe the ghosting you refer to is when it is doing the grey bits. I think I read somewhere it has 4 different shades.

To an extent, the ghosting is temperature related. The hotter the screen gets, the more ghosting I've noticed on mine, but mine always does the full screen refresh every minute. This was reduced by a module reset for me after one year of use.

According to the E-ink manufacturer's the partial refresh is expected to have some ghosting on the S770 module, where at the 10 minute mark a full screen refresh will clean up the screen for another round. Just a different way of using the E-ink screens between the S770 and S771 models.

A hacker's dream would be to have a writable module. A bit like this one: http://www.ti.com/tool/ez430-chronos but by Seiko with all the benefits.

Imagine being able to put your own pictures in it, or to set your own preferred refresh rate.... :mega:
