lcd seiko a158--5060 servicing

Post12 Oct 2011, 16:43

hi all,

just bought a seiko a158, seller said..just need new batterie:-)
I put a new one in it..but no digit's, nothing

some questions
does the module starts when you put the batt in it without the case or does it have to make contact?
or there any other ins and outs i have to know about for this one?

how do i open the module itself..from the front under the lcd or the 4 round
small holes on the back?

thx in advance

Pictures please.

I don't know about how others categorize these things mentally, but I personally remember model numbers LAST of all things. I'm a visual person - I see it, I try to recall the "exploded diagram" from memory, sometimes the entire process of dis-assembly. And the shear number of times someone has asked me about # X, only to find out we really should have been discussing # Y. :x

Remove 4 silver screws holding down LCD panel bezel for access to circuit.

And now pull two brass screws from back to check the other side, where battery would have leaked.

Old Seiko LCDs quite often take a while to "settle-in". Re-assemble it, put the battery in and wait a few days.
Hopefully it will kick in. It might only take a few hours.

after 4 days lying around, it's suddenly alive..but pushing a few buttons..it fades again. The light is always working. Just wondering what makes it fade away again.
I think it must have something to do with the buzzer or bieper. It short circuit somewhere..but where?

@seiko kid...vinegar trick..i've read it somewhere but please enlighten me.

yep..you can not remove the circuit from it's holder.

I've seen this happen before, but don't really know why. Intuitively, I think it's some sort of capacitive effect.
Someone like OldTom might be able to explain exactly what is happening and how it might be fixed.

Hi

To eliminate teh buzzer could you insulate the contacts with tape and reassemble..

Vinegar trick (acetic acid) I'm guessing is similar to using the limescale remover (citric acid) that can get rid of conductive material created during corrosion of copper tracks etc..

I have a similar looking defunct 134a module so interested in this topic.

Good new, after a few days..the digits stayed on.. so i cleaned her again.
Toon the buzzer out and cleaned the sand between the frontgrill and the buzzer.
and now she is a beauty again.

Well done Kasper !

Lets hope it keeps working reliably.
At least this one's up and running again (unlike your Fairchild :-( ).
Ebay can certainly be a bit of a gamble.................which is half the fun for me.
