What to do with a dead synchronar?

For electronic related stuff like module repair, silver epoxy fixes etc.

What to do with a dead synchronar?

Post30 Oct 2005, 22:51

After being sure the synchronar is really dead:
Strip the module from its components.
Cut all wire bondings to the IC.
And place a diode.

Image

Next, kill a working ( in this case sanyo ) module and remove the display by putting a needle under it and gently heat up the display.
(I use a hot-air gun for removing paint from wood)
Once the display is hot enough the display will pop-off.

Image

Next, test if everything will fit into the synchronars case, you probably need to remove some plastic.

Image

Next, rewire the display.

Image

Solder the display to the module.

Image

Test if everyting is working OK.

Image

Solder the module to the reed-switches and solarcells and put everyting in the case and test again and again.

Close the case with a little bit of glue and let it dry.

Image

Pushing the right slider back shows time, pulling it towards you shows the date.
The left slider is used to set the watch, i removed the original left magnet so the watch can't be accidently set.
I now use a Pulsar magnet to set the watch.

And voila you now have a working "synchronar".
Well it is not original, but looks and feels the same :D

Higgie.

Brilliant! Have you ever thought about writing a book -"Frankensteins guide to reviving led watches" :)

The scary thing about this of course is that very few people will be mad enough to open an 800dollar watch to check the wiring...

Would it be possible to put one of those Sanyo modules onto a Pulsar 3013? Perhaps even using the Pulsar display instead of the Sanyo? (I just love my dots).

And yes, as far as i know both displays have the same connections.
But you need to puzzle for a while to find the right connections i think.

Brilliant! Outstanding!

Higgie, from now on I will call you only "Genius"! :D

Wow!

Wish I could do such stuff by myself, I even had extreme problems soldering my light computer for the model train together.

No, i'm from the Netherlands, i use marihuana

But today i noticed that the display wasn't very bright, i know the NiMh cells are only 2.5 Volts but this dim??
So i opened the case and saw i forgot to disable the L.D.R. ( light dependent resistor )

And in the meanwhile i also noticed a couple of mm of space unused in the watch..... Hummm what to do with that unfilled space? :?:
YES!!! i inserted a 10 G's shock-sensor.
Now my synchronar also has a wrist-flick feature :D

Wow - now you're just showing off!!! :D Making it work again is one thing, but upgrading it - Sir, I take my hat off to you!!!

You should put a drum machine in there as well. Fronz would like that

Thanks for the link to the Pulsar rebuild - I can't see the pics for your version :?: but the other two will be really useful when I go to work on some dead modules at the weekend. (chances are they'll just remain dead, but I'm gonna have a try).

And now for the review of the watch....

I had to disable the shock-sensor because it only worked if you flicked the watch sideways. There was not enough room in the watch to rotate the sensor :(
I dropped the module several times on the carpet to check it's shock resistance. The watch kept working fine.
I closed the case with silicone, probably not the most beautiful way but the watch can be reopened easily and is waterresist.
I am wearing the watch for three weeks now and it is running perfectly.
The sliders are very responsive and easy to use.
The watch sets and works like a pulsar date/command.
The watch is charging ok.

If someone comes with a good offer, the watch is for sale.
The stainless case is in mint condition, the module case has some wear from messing around with it.
The band will fit up to a (very) large wrist.
This is a very nice every-day wearable and reliable (fake) synchronar

Higgie,
Very impressive work! What kind of batteries did you use? Where they just 357's or are they something special that is meant for recharging?
