Seiko 0662-5009 - Reset Problem

Post10 Mar 2012, 06:47

Hello Everyone,

I was able to finally open the case on my Seiko 0662-5009 thanks to Adam and his generosity to send me illustrations that guided me in the right direction , but I still have a problem with it blinking and flashing in the second segments. Can anyone help me with this issue? I am sorry to bother you guys, but a couple of people have commented on this issue in my last thread about the problems this watch is giving me, and gave me some sage advice...

**PROBLEM
1) The second segments of the watch flash "on and off" noticeably regardless if the stem is pulled out to the "set" mode or not. So the seconds are constantly flashing noticeably.

2) When the watch is in normal use, if I use the "light" button, the seconds "reset" to "00."

**SOLUTION
1) Change battery and the flashing second segments will return to normal.

2) Do a proper cleaning (battery contacts and button pushers), and the seconds will return to normal.

A couple of things here...I did try cleaning the contacts with a CLR solution mix with distilled water where there was contact with the pushers and the battery well, but that did not resolve the issue. Also, I tried a new battery, and that did not resolve the issue as well. Is this module just broke!?

NOTE: I did NOT pull the LCD from it's slot, and clean it, so if this is something I should try, maybe it is an oversight on my part.

also, I discovered that this crystal was made of plastic, not glass.

Anyway, Thank you all for looking, and if there is something I can do to resolve this issue with a flashing second segments, it would be grand.

It looks like the watch remains in the setting mode, regardless of the position of the stem. Maybe a lever or switch isn't properly engaged or disengaged when the stem is moved. I think you have to disassemble the movement further to investigate the proper position of the stem and the parts that are moved by the stem.

You can easily polish the plastic crystal :-D I use "Brasso copper polish" and an old cotton towel. Apply some polish on the towel and polish the crystal in circular motions. Apply some pressure, but be careful, don't push too firmly.

yes like dutchsiberia said...the stem has a 3 way position or 2 way position...this one has no alarm so it's a 2 way position..the lever needs to be cleaned to it makes good contact again agains the 2 other contacts.

look here as exemple
the stem pushes or pull the vertical lever agains the 2 pins for contact.

Thank you for the tip. on polishing the crystal. Never heard of "Brasso Copper Polish." Since the crystal turned out to be plastic, that changes everything thankfully! I can try to get the crystal spotless, but there are 2 main gouge scratches in the crystal, just big enough for a fingernail to catch. I would like to get those out as well, so I remembered the crystal polishing method Ed posted a long time ago, and wondered if this method would be the to go since there are 2 scratches that are just deep enough to catch a finger nail. Here is the link...

I also want to polish the gold-tone case, and since the case is a brushed look, with a lot of wear on it, I wondered if putting scratch remover and then polishing to a shine would mostly restore it? Also, I want to restore the bracelet to the same shine to match.

Again, thank you much dutchsiberia.

As far as the movement goes, would it be better if I post a "you-tube" video? For whatever reason, I cannot explain this issue very well (my fault), and perhaps when I do post the video, it will be more evident of what is going on.

How do I clean the 2-way Pin? I use CLR,with distilled water, and that should work fine according to what I have heard from people here. Can out point out the places on the movement where to clean?

I hope I am not to much of a bother.

Thank you a whole lot Kasper as always, you are great!

Hello,

Here is a video I made to try and illustrate what happens when the "light" button is pressed and the seconds reset back to "00". I am not totally sure if this will uncover any clues as to what is wrong with it, but I wanted to try anyway.

.....this is the second Seiko 06xx watch in the last week that has appeared on this forum photographed undressed and sitting on a comfortable synthetic or wool felt. The other one got, er, melted down. Other than the battery contacts and the switch contacts (which likely have some intrinsic protection) the rest of the electronics are potentially sensitive to ElectroStatic Discharge. This can result in immediate destruction of some part of the main IC or transient stress that will lead to premature failure in the future. I suggest that you avoid placing your exposed electronics on any kind of fabric. In the absence of specialist products I would use ordinary paper /card instead. An hour or so reading up on ESD and some of the avoidable risks could be time well spent .....

i'm pretty sure, it's still in settings mode.
so you have to dismantle the watch further to see if every contact is clean.
if every contact is clean and you don't see corrosion of any kind,

then the next things you could do.

-take the batts out, wait a day and put them back in.
-take the soldern iron and warm everything up...get pretty close to the sodern..not to close so you burn something. Just warm the connections up. BE CAREFULL (dismantle first so you have the pcb only)
-last solution..sodern a few connection again if you have doub.
