Citizen round module photo needed

Post27 Feb 2014, 12:59

I just picked up a citizen round calculator((9130A). Unfortunately its not working. The board was pretty clean and doesnt appear cracked. But it does seem to be missing something. There are small indents above the battery connection. Does anyone have a photo of what the module should look like in their bits box?

Heres mine

Would it be enough to "just" repair the two traces?

Failure Im afraid. Light doesnt even work. So now I'll have to look for a working beater with a bad lcd panel, cracked glass and a rubber band for a strap to make it look less appealing a restoration job.

I might have been missing some parts also, not on the board, All I have on mine is a ceramic board and plastic back case and lcd panel sat on small plastic housing

Hi Adam.
Not sure if you're aware, but I'm pretty sure those grey tracks on Citizen PCBs ar underneath some sort of translucent layer. Notice how they look a bit hazy. If you put your multi-meter on the 2 ends of a track, you should measure an open-circuit because of this layer.
So if you wanted to re-instate those gold pads, you'd have to scrape this layer away somehow to get proper connectivity with the tracks.

This is true. From experience you are likely to require dremmel + diamond to make a clean cut through this stuff to the tracks below - probably less than a millimeter. Its a real pain.

The other thing you might try is tacking a wire onto the little gold slither where the track enters the black epoxy encapsulation and then onto the relevant pad on the other side of the board (if there is one). This might enable a quick bench check of whether well repaired tracks will actually give the board life.

I think the missing gold pads are just test points that in peeling off have put the traces they were on Open Circuit - don't think you need to replace the actual pad just the track continuity.

Don't forget to check continuity from the big battery pad through its via (visible in PGs board image) onto the other side of the board.

Rgds,

Mark.

Thanks Guys
I did see some contact in the little indents before I added the silver, but obviously not enough.

Im not getting any signal from the battery to the othe side of the board, doe sthis work on the same principle? My battery contact was damaged and I have tried to replace this with silver epoxy.

It could be that your repaired battery pad is still open circuit. You can check the basic continuity very quickly. The thick track that touches the edge of the battery pad looks to be the main V- track on the visible side of the board. Just confirm electrical continuity from the battery pad to the inboard leg of the blue component. And to the nearest gold pad on the other half of this thick track that runs over to the Quartz. That'll tell you whether your repaired battery bad is basically functioning or not.

All the old Citizen Ceramic PCBs are all quite prone to rot from Battery juicing or venting - a black insulating layer forms between the gold surface contact and the underlying tracks. It can be invisible if the gold contact remains in situ - often though it causes the affected gold contacts to blister (if large) or fall off (if small) leaving an ominous black residue behind.

battery connector isnt working properly. I have cleared off what I previously did and put a fine wire in the little hole to see if I could get contact. I managed a few times to get a reading but not enough.

Should I use a diamond dremel wheel or drill to get past the ceramic do you think?

The only time that I've done this I used a little grinding bit - more like a drill than a wheel. I was only really playing around with a dead board to see what was possible etc.

Honestly, I think you may be fighting a loosing battle with this one. Never, say never. But I usually toss these Ceramic boards once I find Da Rot.

RIP Citizen Board...

Tried with the smallest diamond burr dremel make but couldnt get any contact.

So if anyone has a working citizen round calc with cracked glass, bleeding lcd that they want to part with trade or cash give me a PM. This one is not perfect but very wearable, just need a new board.
