Transistor repair/replacement on Pulsar Modules

Post22 Jun 2005, 20:40

Has anyone ever removed or tried to replace the LED drive transistors on a Pulsar module (or any of the surface mount components)? I would appreciate any comments and your experience if you have tried this (either successfully or un-sucessfully). Also I would be interested if someone has a Pulsar module that is beyond repair that I could purchase to use as a trial piece.

Thanks.

I've done that. I just plucked them off with a tiny screw driver and replaced them with other ones from another dead module using silver epoxy. I did this for missing segments but later found out it wasn't neccessary for that particular affliction. Live and learn. :)

What did you find worked better for this affliction?

You don't replace the transistors for missing segments. They are actually turned off and you have to turn them back on by applying voltage to the correct area of the module. Of course it is possible that a transistor could be completely dead but it's usually unlikely. How they get to an off state, I don't know.

The same subject was mentioned at least twice on the forum and Bruce said that drivers should be replaced if the display is missing segments:
http://digital.superman.ws/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=1063
http://digital.superman.ws/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=982

Thus it's hard to understand the meaning of "you don't replace the transistors for missing segments". Please reveal your secret of repairing it by applying voltage to the correct point.
