General Question on Quartz Watch Testers

Post14 Mar 2021, 21:25

As you may have seen from another post of mine, I've been checking and recalibrating my digital watches using an HP frequency counter and a low capacitance probe. Elsewhere on this forum, I've seen, but can't find now, discussions of special instruments made to measure the crystal oscillator frequency. How do these instruments work?

Do they use an electrical probe, like I've been doing?

Do they use some sort of capacitive coupling? If so, please describe.

or

Do they use a microphone to listen to the 32,768 Hz hum? If so, please describe. Is there a particular type of microphone that is especially good in this ultrasonic region?

I'm just wondering if there's a better way for me to approach this.

thanks,
