My most used tool for opening watches.

Post17 Dec 2013, 21:05

a blunt pincet that grips in the opening when it has a ring to open like this nice goldplated casiotron, or the whole plate screws open.
and an 30 year old potatoes knife, shortened and sharp when i want to put the case open :-D , and i use only dedicated stuff when these 2 not work or on specialty watches. :secret:

Nice idea  8-) Sometimes the best tools are the improvised home made ones.

Same here Gents :)
Although I have plenty of tools I find the basic ones to be the easiest to use.
For opening caseback rings I use an untempered set of long tweezers that fit every watch...my first eBay purchase years ago ;)

Well, that tool for casebacks is quite cheap as I've seen Swiss makes for 250$ minimum.
I don't have one but was always tempted to get one.
If you say that it doesn't work that well then I won't bother to get one...unless the real deal for big bucks makes a difference.

I got a more expensive Seiko one and it's OK but Ive had instances of very tight backs on which Ive just used a case knife (Horotec). I would say that if the case back is not v difficult (tight) then the big prying tool is fast and easy to use but for more difficult backs Ive reverted to the conventional case knife or wedge shaped prying knife (by Citizen, like the one shown here http://www.esslinger.com/snap-backcaseopener3.aspx)

Snap on casebacks are an abomination imo. Watch manufacturers should have my Bergeon left handed case knife inserted where the sun dont shine for designing a watch that way, cheap ,crappy and needless !@@!

I agree, especially those caseback that are impossible to open :)
Either way I guess it was the thickness of a watch that defined a thin caseback...threading it would sometimes prove impossible.

Hmmmmmm, Kasper.

This is mine, it definately won't leave a scratch on case backs (with screwed parts)

But, one of my most valued tools though, is this USSR stereo microscope. I wouldn't have the ability to fix many circuits with my soldering iron, glassfiber brush etc etc etc without this sexy beast...

Thanks Kasper,
I made too many mistakes in the past with case openers, screwdrivers etc coming off and leaving scratches.. So I bought that case opener on one of our local market websites. There are a lot of old watch tools offered these days on local market sites, and for very reasonable prices.
