Yema, of course, produced LCD watches in the 70's, in conjunction with semiconductor company Fairchild.
But it wasn't until their take-over by Matra in 1982 that they got involved in the French space missions.
During that period they produced the ana-digi Spationaute (I) and II. These are much sought after by French collectors.
If you google 'Yema Spationaute', you'll find plenty of threads on French space / watch forums.
The Spationaute III was produced in 1988, after Yema were bought out by C.G.H. (Compagnie Générale Horlogère)
- Seiko's French subsidiary; hence the use of a (re-branded) Seiko 7A38 movement in the Spationaute III.
But I'm surprised no-one has mentioned the Seiko A829-xxxx LCD, used by some of the crews of Shuttle missions:
Some watches are made to last only as long as they are fashionable.
Some watches simply aren't made to last.
Seiko watches are designed to withstand the ravages of both time and fashion.
Some day, perhaps, all watches will be made this way.
