cca 1989 Piratron Cosmo Graph versus Casio Cosmo Phase

Post04 Apr 2022, 14:16

Hi,
Some time ago I wrote about Casio "Wrist Instruments" watches of 1989 - including the famous Casio "Moon Graph" - GMW and "Cosmo Phase" - CGW watches...presented against their "rival": the British Zeon Moon Graph watch...
http://www.newdwf.com/viewtopic.php?f=67&t=8482
One may see some Casio advertising of the 1989 "Wrist Instruments" watches on the WWW archive of the old version of Adam's excellent website, since they are not available now - unfortunately - on Adam's current website:

https://web.archive.org/web/20160812100737im_/http://www.digitalwatchlibrary.com/images/casio89/09.jpg
https://web.archive.org/web/20160812112951im_/http://www.digitalwatchlibrary.com/images/casio89/10.jpg

I also presented there how the UK based Zeon Watch company have produced a similar "multi-graph" colored watch, trying to give the impression that they have also a SIMILAR "Moon Graph" watch... :grin1:
In fact their Zeon Moon Graph was only a Night/Day - Sun/Moon colored display watch...but quite advanced for 1989, since it had dual time/DUAL DATE (!)/Chrono/TIMER capabilities. :mega:

Now I try to present You another WANNABE "Wrist Instruments" watch...the ONE AND ONLY (=first ever seen - at least by me :grin1: , no other reported in the collector's ring, no other found on web images archives etc etc)...cca 1989, large LCD Piratron COSMO GRAPH Alarm Chrono - with a quite heavy base metal case, a thick (acrylic?) glass and SSteel caseback - probably launched to be a "competition" to the now famous Casio Cosmo Phase LCD watches/variants:

Piratron seems to be a brand of the Hong Kong based company Functional B Electronics Co.Ltd,famous for their AM/FM Radio Watches in the late 80s.

It is worth mentioning that Casio used the word "Graph" in the famous "Moon Graph" watches, but not in the "Cosmo"watches, where they used the phrase "Cosmo Phase" not "Graph"...would/may this means that the "Cosmo Graph" brand was already reserved/registered by other companies (e.g. Piratron) back in 1987-1989???

Of course...this "Cosmic" Piratron seems to be very rare, but this will NOT necessarily make it also expensive or even desirable...if you are not some sort of LCD and/or Space Age/Space/Cosmos related watches collector... :grin1: But it is important that it EXISTED as a more or less Casio's alternative back than ! :mega:

My newly arrived Piratron COSMO GRAPH, near one of my genuine 1989 Casio Cosmo Phase -Wrist Instruments watch- for the sake of comparison.
Please let me know if You have seen a similar LCD watch, even from another known/unknown brand...Thanks in advance for Your kind answers :Prost:

Super Kasper, thanks for the images :Prost:
I should have think that in Your amazing collection may be found also such an unknown, but interesting "Cosmo Graph"... :-D

And a "technical" question: as I think that may be seen in your first picture above - and I hope that I am not wrong, do You keep most of Your vintage Digital LED/LCD watches from your collection without batteries in Your display cabinets?
Because I thought to do the same for my growing collection of digital watches (because is always a risk to damage their sometime very fragile electronics during a battery change process, I am afraid of battery leaking even if I use only high quality power cells etc etc).
And I even tried with few watches to let them without the batteries; but I've seen that some of them did not wanted to start again after few years without battery power (unfortunately even some rare Seikos) or began to function erratically (e.g. some ESAs 942711), even if they were perfectly functional when I initially removed the batteries... :-(

Thanks in advance Kasper for Your kind answer...and any other opinion regarding this subject will be highly appreciated...

As about Your other watch presented above - the "Electronic Piano Watch", it seems that it first appeared on the market around 1987, initially made by Mamona Enterprises from Hong Kong, but later produced under various other more or less known brands (as You just demonstrated that was the case also with the above presented Piratron Cosmo Graph, made also by the completely unknown - at least by me - "Tune" brand).
