Digital watches simplified

Post06 May 2011, 11:37

When digging for the stroke of genius that is the difference between the Seiko Kinetic and the Ventura Micro Generator System, I tripped over a wonderfull view on explaining de functioning of electronic digital watches.
Source: http://ledwatch.net

It starts with the block diagram; oscilator controlled driver with digital display:

Note the two measuring points!
The first gives the oscilator signal:

The second is the reduced and ´blocked´ signal for driving the display:

Now for LED, LCD, EPD the signal is translated a bit differrently but the basics of the matrix numbers is:

What I particularly like about this way to look at it, is that it at the same time illustrates how to find fault.
The key component is the watch ic. After the very beginning of ic technology these became véry reliable and once through the first months have sort of eternal life.
Nowadays, with computer test programs, extreme simulations and artificial aging they are like mathemetically ´nearing to´ 100% reliable.
The vintage ones still working have been real time ´tested´ thus ditto.
