Minxy watches - does anyone ever notice?

Post12 Jan 2012, 05:35

A comment in another thread had me wondering - has anyone EVER noticed your extra special, super sexy, ultra flashy, uber rare, minty, minxy vintage watch?

My opinion from personal experience is that the only person who notices a watch these days is the wearer. I wear vintage Pulsars, Omegas, and Accutrons every single day and I've only had someone comment maybe a handful of times over the past few years.

Furthermore, the type of person that is most likely to comment on a vintage watch is, of course, a vintage guy, NOT that super cute minxy girl that you were secretly hoping might notice how cool and refined your sense of style is.

So, I could be wrong, but my impression is that the notion of wearing a watch to be noticed seems off base. You're better off to invest in some nice socks.

Anyone agree or disagree?

yeah, socks, that might work. i wear oddball watches all the time and hardly anyone ever says "cool watch". i have been making another case out of bronze. 46mm in dia with a 1947 Lord Elgin, 21 jewel pocket watch movement in it. it is almost done. will post photos then. peter

I have totally different experience. I'm industrial designers and it seams that designers have an eye for details. My co-workers and partners have all noticed my watches what I ware (synchronar seams to be the most interesting for them). I have made many contacts and from that many new customers trough my led watch hobby.

Abe, i know you have a new job, i didn't know you were looking for a new wife to. M:)W:)M

some woman fancy the shoes, others my look..most of them fancy my sense of humor.
Watches are a mens thing. They only work on woman if they are extra big or have a lot of bling or both. Thats why icewatches :~# were such a big succes.

-it starts with the low class people buying something that is alot of watch for a low price..something thats big, heavy colors and much diamonds. Something that strikes a lot of attention. They want to be part of the mid and high class people.
Those people are the sheeps..they just like to do things in flogs..mentallity is..i do what you do..don't ask me why..i don't know.
- After a while a lot of low class people have this thing and the midclass (who normally are a bit more sceptic) thinks they need it to be part of the mass because they are normally sceptic and behave more on the side. They think a bit more before doying something. So they buy it to be part of the mass cause they can blend in more.
- then the high class woman sees it and they normally don't want to be part of the midclass and lowclass..but they want to show the world that they still have feeling with the other classes. They buy it to show that they are still part of the total community and they are not totally of this world. it's like giving to charity. Hey i don't give a damn about those poor children in africa but i will give money so i can ease my mind a bit.

So now you know what to buy :-D

I agree Abe not many people tend to notice the watch I am wearing
I always have a peak at other peoples wrists just in case they are wearing a vintage digital but up to yet I have not had the opportunity to compliment anyone on their nice vintage digital watch.
The forum is the place to be to show off and to appreciate other peoples vintage digitals. ;-)

a few months back, i was strolling trough Antwerp. I saw a nice shop with small design stuff like alessi etc. I knew the shop but it was sale that day cause they going to rebuild the shop. As i wondered trough it, i noticed a golden watch on the son of the shop owners. He is between 25 en 35. So i said..nice watch there. He was wearing a vintage gold digital casio like the new retro's from casio.

He said, yes it's an old one..from the 80ties, bought it nos from ebay.

and that was the only encounter ever :-D with a vintage digital watch except round my arm.

I too wear Synchronars, Pulsar LEDs, Omega LEDs etc. every day, but almost never receive a comment ! Normally only friends who know that I'm likely to be wearing a goofy watch might ask.
Once a croupier in Las Vegas spotted a Synchronar on my wrist, but that's about it.

Most people just aren't very observant. I mean who wouldn't notice a Pulsar LED calculator on someones wrist ? :-D

People will and have noticed your watch/watches, Its juts they do not admit it. I have had a lot of experiences people coming to my home and seeing my collection and then saying to me that yes I was wondering about your watch/ watches you ware wearing but did not want to ask about it. And in the other hand there have been people who are straight for ward and ask me wright away about the watch im wearing.
...or i'm living in totally different universe...

I had a couple of spots when wearing my fave bling Benrus gold-tone.
But mostly I have to inist that people take a look - sadly they usually don't get it..

A girl -friend (not girlfriend) of my age recently went loopy over the Benrus and ended up getting her own LED - result !

Cheers
