Gallium arsenide

Post15 Mar 2007, 08:26

HP was supplied the GA,why did they look a gift horse in the mouth?

this is according to

Did this post offer the link? I am to blame if it did not.

eetimes seems accurate on this subject, but need major updating to the article on early Quartz digital watch accomplishments.

HP was afraid that they based a vital part of their business on the Gallium Arsenide, so they were feeling uncomfortable with just one supplier. That would have made them very dependant on Monsanto which is generally a bad thing as it would have enabled Monsanto to raise prices whenever they wanted.

Yep, It did boil down to some contractual disagreement along those lines.
They(Monsanto) set up shop at HP and send along an engineer from Monsanto to make it all smooth.
Maybe I missed something in the whole story. If Monsanto refused to grant them the SOLE maker and Supplier of LED rights ,I could see a problem and just the same if the offer to do so was to low.

This is all just unofficial speculation, what do we know.
