What was your first car?

Post22 May 2010, 22:18

Mine was a 1980 Vauxhall Chevette GL Hatchback in Regatta Blue.
I had it in 1985 with 34,000 miles on the clock.
Very basic by today's standards, no aircon and only a 4 speed manual gearbox with rear wheel drive. The engine was a whopping 1256cc overhead valve unit. It was great fun though and handled really well.
I now have a 2007 Hyundai Tucson Limited. It has a 2 Litre Turbodiesel with a 6 speed gearbox and Climate Control. Full leather interior and even the spare wheel is alloy. How things change!
Cheers,
Ian

1963 Ford Fairlane Station Wagon - I was a passenger in it(about 10) when it turned over the first 100,000 miles, was driving it when it turned over the second time. I was 18, it burned a quart of oil about every 60-100 miles. Compression was so bad the starter couldn't spin fast enough to start it, so I had to park on a hill and do the "pop the clutch" routine in first gear. Sometimes it didn't catch, so I'd have to wait for some stranger to push me with their car. Ugly pos - solid black with bright red vinyl interior. Top speed was about 40 mph. But the folks gave it to me for free, so what the hay.

Heh, you guys are old... :-D Just kidding. My first car is a 1986 Merkur XR4Ti. I shared it with my 2 brothers, my parent's bought it for us in 1991. I still own it. Here's a small pic of what it looks like now, with it's big brother, my supercharged 2003 Mercury Marauder:

Yeah,we're old, but you missed out on the intimate relationship one has with a manual choke carburetor on a cold morning. And the excitement of stop and traffic whilst going up a hill, when driving a stick shift. And $0.25 a gallon gasoline.

The gas prices of yesteryear were really appreciated on my third vehicle - 69 Cadillac Coup De Ville - 472 cubic inches of engine, four barrel carburetor. About 5-6 miles per gallon but it sure was a smooth cruise on the highway. I think it weighed a little over 6000 lbs.(2268 kg)

1963 EJ Holden.
It had 3-on-the-tree, a 138cu-inch in-line six, and eventually all the luxury items available (a 2-speed fan heater, dual note horns, rear venetians, front and rear mudflaps, handbrake warning light and a diamond encrusted "solid-state" push button radio).

I bought it when I was 16 and had it for 15 years. Over the years it got a new engine, a new gearbox, a new diff, new brakes and new springs !

Here's a pic:

Thanks Bucko. It was strangely pain free. Much as I liked the car, it was time to update. The annual registration merry-go-round was a nightmare. They'd always tell me the reverse lights didn't work, the kingpins needed replacing etc. etc. It didn't have reverse light, and kingpins are never as tight as CV joints. The fact that it had no seat belts was also questioned regularly. Modern mechanics just weren't used to older vehicles.

My circumstances changed too and I no longer had a garage. I've now got a car with air-con, cruise-contol, electric everything. But one-day I'm going to get another one of these old gems......maybe a panel-van variety :-D

BTW, I watch a British show called Wheeler Dealers. It amazes me how cheap 5-10 year old luxury European cars go for in the UK.

Rgds.

1955 standard 10.

Built like a tank and weighed a ton, but I thought it looked cool in battleship grey and white wall tyres. Oldest car so far, but this was my first car in 1987. Never one for speed I think its top was 50mph downhill!

0 to 60 in 2 seconds!?!
That is fast enough to twist you neck, or at the very least cut off the blood supply to the brain. Hmmm... it would explain a few things....

Oh, it's happened. I've been in couple BAD ones. Deliberately sideswiped, one head-on at nearly 50 [other driver, a kid in a rush 'cause he was late for church, was doing 40 of that]. But, I'm past the infant-mortality stage now, and thanks to a safety course taught by an ex-CHP bike cop, I plan to be around for a good bit longer [sorry, Dennis, just can't let go of that will to survive].

Yow :-( I know that what you're about to read is just noise to you. Except that I watched it happen.

Recently on my freeway commute, some organ donor twenty-something was riding a liter+ bike (like you'd expect) with no helmet on, and splashed himself on the back of a soccer mom's big Ford Excretion SUV. The SUV was accelerating from a stopped lane the bike was accelerating in the vicinity of 100 it appeared. The woman had abruptly changed lanes in front of him just as he began screwing it on. Ahead in the open carpool lane in front of me.
He could not maneuver the bike out of the way quickly enough.
Like right out of an Itchy and Scratchy cartoon, although not funny.

I'm certain you can ride just great.
It's the tosser on the phone that'll punch your dance card...
Anyway, Good Luck to you.
