Digital space watch

Post02 May 2011, 18:45

We are all aware of the hype about space watches.

There is a really 8-) one.

It was worn by Viktor Mikhailovich Afanasyev, who clocked a total of 545 space days with Soyuz TM-11, Mir EO-8, Soyuz TM-18, Mir EO-15, Soyuz TM-29, Mir EO-27, Soyuz TM-33/TM-32 and 7 EVOs totalling 38.55 hours.

Very interesting bit of watch history, thanks for brining it to our attention Huertecilla. Do you know if it was his personal watch or was it 'standard issue' for the Cosmonauts in those days? It appears to be a Melody Watch, I am guessing because of the musical notes image under the LCD screen. If it is, I wonder what song it plays? Beatles songs are popular programming in the Japanese Melody Watches. Pehaps the song is "Back in the U.S.S.R." ?

They could and did pretty much wear what they wanted.
As long as it was reliable, had chronograph function and was not not overly heavy it was ok.
In earlier years it did not even need be a chrono.
