For sure this has effect to LED watches: if you try to read an LED watch in direct sunlight while there is a solar blast, you won't see anything.

Interesting fact. I'd like to try it for myself some day. Will it damage the watch itself?

That depends on how near you are to the solar blast when you try it

To put it in perspective:

http://www.tagheuer.com/int-en/home#/int-en-magnetism

and solid state electronics is very, véry much less sensitive.

A bit strong fridge magnet that will stop an analogue quartz stepper motor and permanently upsets the timing of a wiggly spring movement has nó effect on a solid state module.

Solid state electronics is also almost impervious to mássive static electricity discharges when cased.

When solar activity starts to upset even the most sensitive of wristwatches, we will have far bigger problems like massive electric grid power down.
If you feel you need to worry, than forget about you watch; get a small generator and a 20 l. jerry can.
If carefull use of 20 l. gas in a frugal generator will not see you through, our problems are .... serious.
