Hughes Module Display Colours?

Post17 Feb 2013, 19:52

I have just noticed that the Hughes display in this dot display module is made up of blocks of digits of different colours (I haven't checked any others to see if this was a common practice) anyone know why this was done?

one batch ended so they took another one and applied, no difference for the customer so why bother if the specs are the same?

Very common in the dot style, in the exact same pattern as yours. As they moved into segment display you see it very little, mainly on the transitional ones with a colon LED of about 2/3s the size die as the charecters. Once they got to the 1/2 size die for the colon you rarely see it. Based on my inspection of 10-15 of each type just now. I remember the first time I got one that was all green chips, " oh joy, a green display". Hardly. :bang:

So the pattern was by design, why? What is the difference between the different colours?

It wasn't done consistently so Piotr's guess is as good as any - luck of the draw. Obviously the leftmost hour one on;y needs to show 1 & 2 but it appears identical to the other hour register. Probably some meaningless manufacturing choice we are now obsessing over.
