Pulsar P2, P3, Module question

Post05 Oct 2012, 02:09

This is the 3er or 4th time it happens to me, I get a working watch and out of the blue it just
stops working, but then just like that in a few hours it starts working again, sometimes it quits a second time
and then is all good and never gives a problem again. Anybody had this experience?
Right now I'm having this problem, Got it out the box put new batteries and work good, the next day it stop working
I put it on a battery pack and got it to work but then quits again. The module looks very clean and no residue of corrosion
The only thing I can think of is the QC. Here is a picture or the module. This is the first time I get one that is no painted
but is cover with a light coat of silicon.

I waited a few days to see if I had any luck and the module just came to life on its own but it just didn't happen.
Is such a beautiful module and soo clean, is a shame it just quit working. I built a tester and checked the crystal Oscillator and it was not working
I procceded to do a piggy back Oscillator chip, I did not desolder the QC from the module, I left it there, see what happens.
Is working great now. I had luck before with the chips, I got some that keep good time and lost less than a second every 2 days, I can live with that.

I'm curious why you didn't try swapping the crystal. They do go bad, particularly the old ones.

I thought about changing the Crystal but I don't have a new one to try and judging from the symtoms
I assumed the QC was bad, I might be wrong but the watch quit three times on me in a lapse ot 3 days.
Do Crystals fail like that? or do they just fail for good and give you the single digit.
I never got a single digit on this module, even when I applied a signal with an external oscillator It never landed on a single digit.

Before I did The chip mode I expent an evening going thru old post about this, thanks to you guys there is
lots of information. I came to the conclusion tha I'm not a Purist and I prefer a working module even if
is not original (if the watch is ever sold it will be disclose to the buyer)

I learned that there are many components to the circuit on the board and they are prone to fail, by doing the chip I bypass the whole circuit and hopefully
I ended with a more reliable watch, I think is worth the drawbacks, battery life, less accurate but no much,
all my Pulsars lost or gain a few seconds a month anyway. I have a P2 with a modern QC and keep very good time
so yes, if the QC is the only problem is a no brainer, is easier to do and looks cleaner.

After I did the mode I painted and re-arrange the white wires and chip with flat black paint, is hard to see thru the red crystal.
from the back is imposible to know there is a chip because I got GND from the front instead of the back Trimmer.
