Can you help me ID my Pulsar?

Post15 Feb 2008, 18:37

Greetings all!

I got this Pulsar watch as a kid some twenty years ago, my mother stopped wearing it and handed it down to me. I kept a tin can full of cool gadgets and rediscovered this watch about five years ago during an evening of reminiscing of childhood. Since then I've been curious as to its origins.

I have not seen another watch like this on any of the LED watch websites, and I've been looking over the years. There are a few details that stand out:
Crystal says "Tiffany & Co.", but there are no other Tiffany markings on the watch.
Leather band I believe is not original, so it makes it harder to ID.
Solid gold, see back cover picture.

Can somebody point me in the general direction of this watches model number? There are some man made engravings on the watch with numbers that have no real meaning. The watch powers on with batteries, but I get mixed messages from the screen. I don't have the magnet and can't try and set the time. When I add the batteries I either get the time (pic #6) or I get "1 : " (pic 5). Any tips? Value?

Mens dress model, model 7408-1, 14k gold with strap, try mens models here...

http://www.oldpulsars.com/

You could try a fridge magnet to set it - it may take a bit of fiddling but it's not impossible and a spare one should be available to buy from one of our members.....along with a strap/buckle combo. Try www.retroleds.com or the trading section here.

Does the date button (the top one) give anything. Does the time advance properly?

Please use spacers when the batteries are in to prevent any fatality issues......

Tiffany sold their own branded pulsars in their shops back in the 70's and normally have an added value, especially if the logo is complete which yours appears to be.

Value - no idea, sorry. It needs some restoration work but that's not a huge obstacle. Sentimental value - it was your mum's watch :-D

Nice one and welcome to the forum 8-)

Bingo. I knew it must have been similar to the mens dress model, however I've never seen one with the "Tiffany & Co." Branding. Alas, a quick trip to google with "pulsar 7408" sent me to: http://www.ledwatches.net/photo-pages/pulsar7408.htm and here I am. I'll have to buy some proper batteries and fab up some spacers, and see if I can set the time. I've been using fridge magnets and powering the watch off two AA batteries. Probably not the best method, but at least that way I can remove power quickly should I have to, plus I'm certain the batteries are good and will not peak 3 volts.

The crystal is in great shape, and the logo is in tact as you suggested. The case is in much better condition than the picture shows, The photo makes it look scuffed up, but in reality I'd give it a solid 8.5/10. It has no sentimental value to me whatsover. I don't ever remember my mom wearing this, although she said she did. Ahe gave it to me only because she knew I collected these little trinkets. She is a live in nurse for wealthy older French women (talk about a niche). As my mom has always been a contributor to the community, these French ladies would constantly give her "junk" to donate to the church fair, or goodwill, etc. This is probably one of a thousand gizmo's I've collected over the years. I've thrown nearly everything out except for some items... this being one of them.

Thanks for taking the time to write your post! Super informative!!! I wish I could contribute more to this forum, but the last thing I need is another expensive hobby, lol. I collect F1 model cars and even that needs some trimming. I'd be happy to offer this watch to somebody who'll value its possession moreso than somebody who'd want to turn this into some teeth :) I'll be up and around here.

Thanks again guys ;)

Danny,

The earlier Pulsars do require spacers--sometimes it's easy to forget which ones do and which ones don't. But the mens dress requires 2 386 batteries. I prefer the Renata 386 batteries, but any silver oxide will do. They are readily available.
