Procedure for Opening a P1 Case?

Post12 Apr 2010, 06:57

Hi.

I'm looking for some advice on how to open a P1 case. I know they are normally soldered shut, but I'm looking for specific advice on the procedure for opening one. Step by step instructions along with a few hints for the tricky parts would be ideal.

I happened upon a P1 salesman's model which has the original 25 chip model. I'd like to open the case in order to see if the module shows any signs of life. There appears to be some corrosion damage to the leads to the battery connectors in the back battery compartment so I'd like to open the case in order to bypass those and to inspect the module.

When I received the watch, there was a line of glue around the seam at the back of the watch case (which was easilly removed). The glue was a yellow color and seemed like a soft epoxy (I'm guessing). Now, the glue is gone but the watch still appears to be sealed. I haven't tried to apply force to seperate the front and back. There are two possibilities:

1) The case is soldered shut like a 18kt P1 and was never opened.
2) The case was unsoldered and then glued shut again.

I originally thought that case #1 was more likely because of the presence of the glue. However, now I'm wondering if case #2 is more likely because the level of skill used to apply the glue seems much lower than that required to open a case that was soldered shut. Also, the manual that came with the watch has a typed note from Pulsar warning against exposing the watch to water. So, I'm wondering if the glue that was present may be a precaution against that rather than being used as an adhesive to close the watch.

In any case, I'd be most grateful for some hints as to best practices for opening the case, either if it's soldered or glued.

Thanks!

-abe.

p.s. My humble apologies if I seem to monopolizing the Pulsar group lately. I have a lot of questions at the moment.

Abe, I think we're getting into "curiosity-killed-the-cat" territory here. I understand your excitement, and applaud your enthusiasm, but must reiterate my previous advice and in the friendliest, but firmest terms council you against any further "exploration". There is virtually nothing to be gained, but much may be lost, and whether that happens by design or accident, the damage will be done. Opening an 18K P1 is actually not that complicated [I've done it five times]; getting it back together correctly is the tricky part. There's no way I can judge from the pics if the method of joining the case halves is the same as on an 18K or not, so I won't go out on a limb and give you a possibly bad suggestion. As I have discovered on many other occasions in life, sometimes, the best course of action is to do nothing; I think this is one of those occasions.
