Post24 Oct 2011, 19:06

Inherited one recently. Trying to find out how much it's worth. Can anyone help?

You should find out if it's working or not because that will sway the price $250 one way or another.

I'll defer to the experts for a precise appraisal. I just wanted to say... Oooooh, nice!!

The photo is very murky...I am guessing it says Tiffany & Co. in lower right of screen? Condition changes it s lot - a T & C marked piece has no other features or advantages, other than the logo on the glass. And if the glass is chipped or scratched badly, it is questionable whether the T & C marking adds ANYTHING.
 chipped glass, non-working..$100 tops(nobody bids squat for Big Time cases),
$300 if great case and glass non-working.
$250 if working but chipped up to hell(junk watch)
$600 if all is working and glorious as the sun. Box and paper might add $100.

P4 module for $250? I don't know Abe, it's starting to get pretty hard to actually pull in a working P4 module in a junk case for that, on average. Even out of one's shown working, some percentage of them actually have issues.

Ed,

One way of looking at it is that a replacement Strikes and Spares P4 module costs $250 (without trade-in), so I was using that as sort of a rough baseline for module value.

True, P4 prices seem to be on the rise and it's particularly hard to find a working P4 module with really good wrist flick action, if that's important to you. You'd think P4 modules would be a little better in the reliability department but it seems that they can be darn fussy beasts.

Does it seem to you that a higher percentage of the P4 dress models tend to be working? If so, is there a reason for that? They aren't much simpler, being essentially the same except for the mercury switch. So, why are working P4's so hard to find - are people hoarding the limited number of working ones?

I don't know how the SAS module works out, or if it is considered a deficit or a plus. The Dress models without the flick seem to have held up better, but that's just my opinion. People strap the Dress movement to the P4 chassis, ditto with the other Sanyo movements. The real problem, from an economy standpoint, is it takes a few hours and a working movement to start with. So nobody really wants to rebuild a P4 module for less than [drum roll]... $250. I know I don't. Yes, I have stockpiled a handful of Sanyo movements for those rebuilds. More people want them for a P2-P3 rebuild, so the P4 cases just sit around, empty. In the big picture, the P2-P3s are the more sensible ones to rebuild [IMHO]. More band parts, more glass, more cases. The P4 line is destined to become very rare in excellent, working condition.

I am guessing the SAS P4 module is auto-set.

It is a working watch. It has some minor scraps but you have to look super close to see em. No chips or anything. So would $550 or $500 be a reasonable price?

Not many Bigtimes appear on Ebay and I cannot recall seeing a Tiffany & Co one appear in the last 6 months. Someone tried to sell a working Pulsar logo one in good working condition a while back for around $450 but it did not sell. You may have to set your opening price a bit lower than this.

I think Ade is right....you'll need to start at like $250, and hope for better. Unless you are going to take really clear shot and claim it is exceptionally nice. Value falls off quickly from the top end, on just a few deep marks. When the photos are murky, value is held to the minimum. Unless you are really lucky.

Maybe this is a daft question but does the Tiffany brand really add any value over Pulsar? What about Nieman Marcus?

I mean, isn't Pulsar of roughly equal prestige as Tiffany and it has a history/story that is much more interesting to the LED watch crowd. What could possibly be cooler or more stylish than a vintage Pulsar, right? I guess it probably comes down to rarity and perhaps the scarcity of the Tiffany or Nieman Marcus labels commands some premium.

Personally, I think I'd value them about the same, but that's just my own humble opinion.

I do agree. As an avid Pulsar collector I am more interested in collecting watches with the Pulsar logo on them. Anything else is just a curiosity to buy as I do not like to collect duplicates of any watch.

It seems to be of the most value to people who are original owners, or who have bought things at those stores. It does add to the price in the general market, but it's really just a little extra paint on the crystal. Occasionally a cool box.

And there is always that.

I feel that way about the logo on most driver's watch screens - messy. Put it on the back panel, facing other people...so they know what you're wearing. :-P Like on a Mido.
