Certainly could be, but could also be some other broken circuit trace that is making and breaking contact with thermal expansion and contraction.

Just thought I'd piggy-back a question on an existing thread instead of starting anew...

I have a "Date Command Module" that has a lazy colon. It doesn't show up until I start setting the watch. Just curious if that is unusual or somewhat normal. I know broken segments (before setting) is a lot more common.

Ok, never mind. The colon just went off again. So there is an issue. Anyone know what can cause that? It's both dots, not just the one.

Ah, the plot thickens. When the colon goes out, the first digit goes out too. Also when setting the hours it goes, 1, 2, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9... Instead of 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9...

Your hours are setting just fine. The digits are actually progressing (1)1, (1)2, 1, 2, 3, and so on, normally, to (1)0. This is almost certainly a bad digit-driver transistor, and if so, is an easy fix (I've done dozens of these). Even if it's a broken wire bond in the display itself, you don't need a new module.

I was going to try a new oscillator chip (I have some on order), but I had my doubts that would work. Maybe it would? Thanks.

It would not. There is no functional connection between the quartz crystal and the display, except through the driver transistors.

I meant for the timing issue. Not the missing digit/colon. I think I'll just sell the module as is. It's very clean with no acid damage. (Case is near perfect too) This looks to be a quality control issue.

Just to clarify, I'll probably be selling the module ONLY. The reason I brought up the nice condition of the case was to illustrate that the watch wasn't dropped. IE: The module wasn't (presumably) faulty from abuse.

Ok, so I played around with the module a little more today. It seems the two issues are one in the same. When the colon and digit return the watch sets and advances fine. When they vanish, the watch wants to go from 2:59 to 1:00. I have a feeling temperature might have something to do with it. (When it's in my hand it seems to work ok). So must be a bad solder joint.
