What to do with a "part working" 901 Wrist calculator?

Post10 Feb 2017, 11:48

Hi everyone.

Newbie to forum.

I have a Pulsar LED wrist calculator 901.

The time and set function works fine, but I can't seem to get the
calculator working. Pushing the "o" button does nothing.

It was a chance purchase off ebay.

The watch hasn't been used for a very long time and powered up straight
away with new batteries.

Is it possible this can be repaired, or the circuit board/ module cleaned or
airbrushed or anything to make it work 100% with calculator?

Anyone own an old module part that works?

Or could direct me to a repair?

It seems such a shame to have such a great historic piece that still tells and sets the time great, but the calculator function doesn't work..!

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Sure it's not a 902 ?
The calculator function is activated by "0" (901) or "+" (902).

Do not attempt to dis-assemble the module, or let anyone else who isn't specifically familiar with this watch.
The topside of the module is very fragile.
Rgds.

It's a 901.

I've done my research

Ok what is a "part working" 901 worth?

That tells the time OK after a full battery replacement but that the calculator function is an entire fail... worse it gives sporadic part 8 numbers when pushed real hard... all over the display and in the wrong location on the LED display...

Not much from what I have found out.

That be a fair comment?

Hello!
A bit old thread but I've done a similar buy like yours on ebay. A 901-module and It also said that the"calculator" was not working. But the "0" button and the underlaying pads were the problem on mine, oxide and dirt of course. After a clean-up it's fully functional. Have you cleaned the contact-surfaces on the plastic pads? A delicate task surely, but if you are VERY sensitive you should be able to do this...

Seems to be a standard fault.

My 901 and 902 both had failed calc modes. Both needed disassembly and the contact pad cleaned. These watches are extremely fragile in the display side. The led display one wires are exposed and are so fragile a nasty glance in their direction may cause them to fail!

The contact pad is a film similar to negative photographic film with the traces applied. If you venture this far, clean with diluted alcohol and a cotton swab, both the film and the calculator PCA contacts.

NEVER place the module display side down :!:

Aloha Geoff, couple of questions, can you access the contact pads without removing the 3 soldered pads. In other words is there room for a cotton swab to fit without needing to completely remove that contact film? Also how do you make a diluted alcohol formula?

Update, I was able to carefully remove the module from the case and clean the keypad contact points, everything works fine now. Reading through all the 901 related posts helped me to clearly understand the process of removing the module with extreme caution and restoring its functionality.
