Interesting...where was this auction? (Obviously, I did not buy it; I have six of these, already.) Any other pics?
Not a bad price, actually, considering there is over $4000 in melt (gold) value.
And, all claims to the contrary, this is NOT a Tiffany Calculator. Uli's $22000 Calculator (which has been on eBay for five years and counting, now) IS the true Tiffany version...somewhat different case, totally different bracelet. However, since this particular specimen (which, as far as I can tell, has never been seen before), has a serial number (073) within the -first- 100, WOULD be considered one of the actual "Limited Edition" 18K Calculators (I have serial numbers 003 and 081). They were sufficiently popular to warrant four additional "runs" of 100, bringing the total production of the Classic model to 500. The Tiffany and "Small" (Euro-style) calculator production numbers are unknown, but cumulatively, probably did not exceed 200-300 units (based on known serial numbers).
A pity that, over the years, the great majority of these have gotten separated from their original, matching-serial-numbered boxes.
