Those MkIII/IV scrapers are certainly riehl hard to work on. Out of 5 or 6 lots I've only got 2 going. I try to make sure there's an encapsulated IC amongst them, which invariably do work. He doesn't seem to have these any more though.

Get yourself an unopened MkI/II. I'm sure you'd get one of these fired up in no time.

Rgds.

Use the original displays and cases to build "Syncronar clones" with a newly designed module...

The trick with Barry's auctions is to wait for one with boards that have alot of parts still attached to them. That one listed looks like there might be 3 with everything but a solar cell. Most of those boards look like the resistors were pulled out of them. I lucked out and won an auction that looks like it has 5 boards with everything but a solar cell. Sometimes ones that are still in the red bottom only need a new S/C and batteries.

In one batch of MkI/II boards I bought I had one with a display that was bent at a 45 degree angle, green fuzzy traces, and missing a QC. But when I put power to it, segments lit up. Added a QC and voila! It was working! Carefully bent the display back to perpendicular added an SC and put it in a case. I even figured out how to fit the bloody V80s in flush. Mess around with these long enough and you're bound to get it right.

Certainly not if you have to pay for it. But as a hobby project it'd be nice.
