Hi Kevin.
See below for battery terminal connectivity (image borrowed from JThomas):

Scrape the gel out with a sharpened paddle pop stick, or a screwdriver, or whatever you have handy. Don't be too rough though......you don't want to damage anything.

Andrew.

1. "Browse" to the file of interest.
2. Click "Host It".
3. Copy the Forums1 URL from ImageShack screen.
4. Past the URL into your post.

Hope this helps.

So far so good Kevin. Doesn't look to be a lot of corrosion evident.........the real story will be revealed when the batteries are out !

Hey Kevin,

Nice job on opening the module and getting pics posted on the 'net. That patch of green fuzz at the bottom right of the first picture has me a little worried. Hopefully the acid didn't eat through the traces there. I would remove that piece of "tape" to see if there's any more damage underneath it.

The next step would be to resolder a wire to the spot where it got pulled off the board. See the JThomas pic charger105 posted. Test to see if the solar cell still works by attaching a multimeter to the wires, reading DC voltage. Hold the module up to a light source. If the meter reads ~3.0v then the cell is still working. If it reads -3.0v, you have the leads reversed. If it reads nothing, then the solar cell is shot and needs to be replaced. Next you can power it up with a 3v source to see if the module still works. Attach it to the wires (note the polarity) and use one of the slider magnets to activate the reed switches. Try these things out and see where you're at.

You can use alcohol, but it won't be much good on this gel. That gel is supposed to go hard, and if it had, it can be fairly easily broken away in chunks.
When it's in this gel state, just scrape most of it away with a stick or something, and wipe the rest away with a cotton bud (I think you guys call them Q-tips :-) ).

Rgds,
Andrew.

The solar panel is part of the circuit that charges the batteries. So, the two wires that attach to the board are used to test both the solar panel and the functionality of the module itself. So to recap:

1. Solder a new wire to the board.

2. Attach a meter (reading DC voltage) to the two wires. Hold the module up to a light source. It should read ~3.0v.

3. Remove the meter and attach a 3.0v power source to the two wires. Check the functionality of the board.
