Weight of Synchronar case materials

Post13 Feb 2010, 19:10

Zinc cases - 12.4-13 g. Center bar adds only .2 grams.
Stainless cases - 17.2-17.7 g.
Gold-filled - 18.3-18.5 g.

This is a result of weighing about 2 dozen cases.

I have no weights for solid gold or Titanium. I'm thinking the gold will be heavier that any of those above - unlike the situation with Pulsars, where a solid gold case actually weights less than a gold-filled case, due to hollowing of areas that are solidly filled on a gold-filled or stainless case. A Synchronar just doesn't have much room left for "hollowing out" the metal case.

Hi Ed.
Which ones were zinc ? I don't remember seeing these referred to before.
Don't tell me I've got another style to add to my collection :-)

They seem to have been primarily the cut-corner Sunwatch(no bar) case) and the Synchronar cut-corner. "Cut-corner" - angled, not the rounded corner.

A lot of those are mistakenly considered brushed stainless. Hence the weighing.

I assumed the flat corner models were SS.
If they're zinc, it might explain why most of them seem to be Sunwatch cases.......the centre bar could distort much more easily on a zinc case.

Hmm, that seems heavy for titanium. Guess it would be interesting to see what the weight ratio is to some other common meetals.

after now having worn this particular casetop for these last several months, it appears to be exhibiting the characteristics of s/s. i think it is a sandblasted top, giving it the grayish titanium look. it has flat corners and no slot in the rear for the setting magnet access. soooo, i guess it is s/s. peter
