Batteries

Post07 Dec 2017, 18:43

I have a black 2100, that I have opened to replace the batteries. I may have bitten off more than I can chew. One of the leads on the solar panel pulled off, looks like it can be repaired, hopefully I don’t do more damage.
I am having a hard time locating replacement batteries to use, does anyone know where I can source new batteries?

V40H here:

V80H here:

V80s will give better run-time, but are a tight fit. You may have to do some grinding.
V40s will be a lot easier.

You don't need to pull the module out of the top so the solar panel shouldn't be exposed. Too late now I guess.
Is it a MkI ?
Does it run off an external 3V source ? Would be wise to check this before investing in batteries.

Yeah, I screwed up, it is a mkiv. I have had it about 25 years was working perfectly until one of the cells died. Thought I had the skills to take it apart and replace the batteries, but didn’t research if batteries were available now I afraid I will never get it working again.
Thanks for the link, I noticed those cells don’t have solder tabs, how do you get around that.

I just solder onto the battery casing. Must be very quick so as not to compromise the battery seals. Use flux, and clean off afterwards.
Or cut one of these in half:

Just extracting the batteries from the board may break wire bonds on the chip if it isn't an encapsulated chip (a lot of MkIVs were not encapsulated).
I really do suggest applying 3V from an external source to check the board is still functional.

Andrew.
