New to led watches, with question

Post16 Dec 2011, 00:12

Howdy all, sorry if this is the wrong place to post this, but I was perusing ebay recently for a cool looking watch and stumbled onto the led watches from what seems to be the 70's. Loved the look and ended up winning this for 40$. The guy says it's a Compuchron? I guess my questions are, whats the history behind these awesome looking watches, why don't we have bright red laser watches anymore, and was that a fair price to pay? Thanks very much!

Welcome to the forum :-D

I very similar looking watch was identified as a CompuChron on a previous thread ( http://www.dwf.nu/viewtopic.php?t=3469&highlight= ) so it would be a strong possibility.

The watch contains a module produced by Hughes Aircraft Co, if you open up the back it should have a date sticker over the top of the quartz crystal which will give you the year and month that it was produced also around the side it should be marked with the country where the module was produced.

There is an abundance of information relating to the LED watch on this forum, have a browse through and enjoy. :-D

$40 is very cheap for a working 70s LED, well done - you got a bargain. :-D

Hah... I'm already looking at others XD

Thanks for the welcome and for the replies!

The watch came today and those pictures(from the listing) do not do it justice, this thing looks very nice, only a couple small scratches on the screen. It's wonderful!

A very sad trouble arose though, it seems about a link too small for me :(

What does anyone know about getting new bands on these or maybe finding some links to take to a jeweler?

Welcome - nice find! You can certainly put on a different band: nowadays there is good water-resistant leather, rubber, and of course metal. The band might be fairly common, really hard to tell from the outside/front. You'd need a clear picture of the links close to the clasp on the inside of the band, so we can see how they inter-connect. And a reasonably accurate measurement on the width of those same links. For a replacement band you need the "lug" width. The lugs are the opening in the case for the band. That one is probably 18 or 19 mm.

Hi there, I'm very sure that your watch is NOT a CompuChron, but instead it's a Hudson Harris Quantum LED watch, just like this one that I have. Cheers!
