President LED watch.

Post11 Dec 2005, 12:59

Hi everyone,

I picked up this President watch recently...

Image

I took the module out to clean the contacts and noticed something unusual. The module was made in Scotland, does anyone have any info where these were made as I live in Scotland and didn't know we had a LED module factory sometime in the past.

Here's a picture of the module...

Thanks...

And proabably 30% of the LED watches in the 70's had them. :) Although most said Mexico on the plastic piece.

Seem to remember an earlier thead where someone said some Wittnauer Polara modules (also Hughes) were made in Scotland. Think that suggestion was questioned at the time, but this kind of proves them right.

I can remember from back in the day, that National Semiconductor had a big plant in 'Greenock' otherwise known as Silicon Glen. They were making masses of modules, chips, everything semiconductor up there. Fairchild and many other companies had fabrication plants in the area. I think at the time the UK govt had big subsidies and grants for multi-national companies to build factories there to provide much needed employment.

Also, didnt Sir Clive Sinclair himself have a Scottish based plant build the modules for the Black Watch and the Sinclair Wristcalculator ??

Anyone else recall this ?

Thanks everyone for the info...

Diginut,
I had forgotten all about silicon glen, that?s where these modules would have been made then.

I am proud to own a little piece of Scottish electronic history within my President watch.

Cheers...

Dont forget 'Westclox'. As a kid I had a big chunky alarm clock that said 'Westclox - made in Scotland'. Then like 25 yrs later I see an LCD watch on ebay apparently made by Westclox, and I bought it. Thing is I've been looking for it just now and cant find it at the moment, but I want to see if this too says 'made in scotland'. Might make me proud as I am supposed to be Scottish, aye lad :)

I am sure 'quartzmatic' is a brand name of westclox, but that sounds like it was USA.

Anyone know for sure ??

I too remember Westclox, and also remember being a little pleased that a company from good old blighty was competing among all those ubiquetus far eastern companies.

I did a quick Google for Westclox and found this... http://clockhistory.com/westclox/company/dates/

Look down to 1949 & 1950, seems they are quite old.

Nice find Klippie :) So it turns out that westclox isn't a British co. after all. Oh well its still got a decent bit of Scottish heritage.
