25 mm led module advice

Post16 Feb 2012, 13:58

I thought someone here might be able to advise. I have three working 25mm LED modules. I saw on a recent thread they are harder to come by. I have someone wanting to buy the three and would like to know what you guys think is a fair price to ask. Why are they so desireable? Is it worth me looking for some good cases and using them myself?

Thanks for any advice, I'm into lcds over LEDs so my knowledge of LEDs is just what I have gleaned from here over the last few years.

thank you

I assume that it is the Hughes 25mm module that you are referring to. They are not that hard to come by but they do seem to be less reliable than the 29mm Hughes - I have at least ten watches that use that module (photo's below). I would suggest a value of around £40 per module or £100 job lot.

1. Croton.

2. Compu Chron.

3. Hughes.

4. Microsonic.

6. Croton (gold tone)

7. Zodiac.

9. Unknown.

10. Unknown.

As you can see some of the modules have a built in message - those modules are harder to come by.

Ed had a good stash of cases for that module, if you are interested I have a Zodiac case to move on.

The choice of cases Ed sent me a while back...

Kasper, the Hughes will not fit in that case - you need a 26mm Fairchild module......Sorry.

Interesting, I didn't know they made an LCD version of this very nice Fairchild case design. It looks like Omega stile but more elegant as it is flatter. I have the LED version with a red crystal:

The original Fairchild module version sold in there isn't so nice as it has small dim digits. Plus rather poor quality I guess as all three NOS modules I had of these broke down meanwhile. I adapted a more advanced Commodore module to fit in there (had to grind it down a bit flatter), this one is very bright and time and date can even be swapped to European standard

Just to add alittle extra the three modules all ahve different button positions

1 10-2
2 1-3
3 2-3

I think the first is a hughes and the second a kuatron but dont know the third

Hm... isn't the set button on 25 mm Hughes modules at about 8 o'clock :?: while the command button is at 2?

I was a bit confused too... ;-)
On 25mm Fairchild modules the command button is at 2 and the set button at 4.
I think the OP has some more exotic modules

1 (10-2) is probably Saturn/Armitron/Quasar.

I think the only flaw in the 25mmHughes is that the quartz crystal and the circuit board are not on the same piece of phyical material. Consequently, the leads to the crystal get damaged or disconnected. I frequently glue the circuit board to the battery holder around the edges to avoid that. It doesn't stop you from working on anything for the most part.
