Accurist or Ratners?

Post02 Sep 2016, 02:04

Hi all here's one I've never seen before. :-?
Giving this Accurist with the Hughes 8 o'clock setting pusher module a good clean having repaired it.
When the adhesive holding the crystal in gave way, looks like they used
some kind of tape. (see under crystal on 2nd photo)
When I started to clean it up the name Ratners became
visible on the opposing side.
Anyone else ever come across this? :call:

Actually come to think of it I don't ever recall seeing a Ratners mens LED on ebay or anywhere.
Or maybe I'm just going senile. :fool:
Either way I now own one, wonder how many others have reversible crystals.
Compuchron/Rado? M:)W:)M

Hope everyone's well don't seem like much activity on here at the moment.

Its obvious what has happened, they've sent a sample watch to Gerald Ratner, he's said it was "crap" so they've rebranded

Interesting!!! My initial thought was that it was originally branded 'Ratners' to sell in store but then sent back to Accurist for re-branding following the 'Ratners Crap' remark - however I did some googling and Gerald Ratner didn't say that until 1991 so the watch would of been out of production by that time, I wonder if the owner of the watch sent if to Accurist because he didn't want to be seen wearing a 'crap' watch.

I think I have a boxed 'Ratners' watch somewhere.

BTW: If it was my watch I would put the crystal back in with the Ratners side showing - Funny how things change isn't it. :grin1:

Great to have all your comments guys. :-D
The only problem with the Ratners Logo is that it is in Gold colour.
But the watch is so bling maybe it could pull it off?
What you recon? :call:

If the logo is recessed then you can change the colour or just freshen it up with an artists paint pen.

Does the logo colour not match the watch colour?

No the watch is polished silver more chrome like.

Now there's a problem with the module, it keeps going to 3 zero's (0.00) and the display stays
on when I press to check the time. I have to remove a battery hatch to shut it down.
Then it becomes almost impossible to set, as it either shows the 0.00 again or it runs through the
different setting modes on it's own without touching anything. (depending when 1st contact is made)
My best guess so far has been that there's a short on the setting contact, as it's not the buttons
or case as it does it even out of the watch on the test bench. :bang: :bang:

Help me O b 1 your my only hope.

If the buttons are not sticking (I would double check as that sounds the most likely) I would take the module out (25mm Hughes?) and clean the traces off with a fibre tip pen, make sure none of the button contacts are sticking out and shorting on the case, generally just look for anything obvious..... if that doesn't work or the module is doing the same outside of the case then it spells trouble as it points to a chip fault.

The Ratners watch that I have was not quite as I remembered, it came in a box marked as 'Carronade' with paper-work relating to Ratners.

Looks as if it's gonna be a chip problem then as it struggles outside as well.
I guess there's no fix, not even from Hanno the great. ;-)
Having said that I have fixed a chip problem in a Hughes before by repeated hot
and cold treatment and leaving the batteries in untouched for a month or two.
(Remember the one that was running double double quick time?)
It went to just double time then to correct, took about 4 months.
I suppose this is a little different to a counting issue but don't see another choice.
Unless you guys know better.

NB.
I have already cleaned up the cell side of the module but the display side is
sorta sealed so I can't see it being that.

So I won't be deciding whether to have it Ratners or Accurist until I get the thing working.
