12.5 PF Crystal ?

Post01 Jan 2007, 22:33

Pulsar crystals are 32.768 KHZ and 12.5 PF, right? Is there any thing else it's necessary to specify? I notice that ther is a wide variation among physicals sizes which matches this description.

Frequency is correct, but the capacitance seems a bit high [I seem to remember the originals measuring out at 6-8 pF]. A higher effective capacitance will cut into and limit the range of the trimmer, so you might find yourself unable to adjust to 0 deviation. There is an inverse relationship between capacitance and frequency in a resonant circuit; the higher the capacitance, the lower the frequency, and vice-versa. The early, large, MTQ-32 types also had a large thermal inertia; in other words, they changed frequency slower, and less overall, with each degree of temperature change. Take a little time and try to find an exact, original replacement; there are SO many dead modules out there...if you come up empty, I guess anything goes...
