An open ended question...but another 5 LED watches

Post24 Apr 2007, 14:08

I still have only the one LED Datatime watch which I am proud of finishing & still working (which is better) but any ideas if I was going to add to the collection :

Looking for lets say 5 other LED watch ideas which are not beyond a normal human beings bank balance.

Bulova sideview - it's a classic, a one button is nice, but so are the two buttons.

Plastic cased Texas Instruments - really cheap, but very durable if not left with batteries in them, very light.

Anything with a hexagonal or octogonal case - Imado, Mercury Time, Microstar "Depose", Gruen, etc.. You might want to avoid models with the command button at 1 and the setter at 7-8 oclock, those will have the 25 mm Hughes module which is proving not to be as robust as some others.

Something rectangular and "Omega - ish" - economical choices are available from Birks,Fairchild and Timex. Shameless plug: I have Birks rectangular in gold-tone, MINT AS NEW, in the very nice box. Mineral glass screen and flick-wrist action that can activate the date and the continuously running seconds by two or three sharp flicks, respectively - $100 plus shipping.

It's not LED, but the gold Pulsar LCDs from member Greg Ratcliff are a fantastic deal at $100-ish in the box.

Not specifically addressing the OP's question, but I just want to agree with that; those cheap plastic TI's are surprisingly reliable. I got to where when i'd find one at a flea market i'd pretty much count on it working, and most of the time I wasn't disappointed. They also have a rather nice look if they're not beat up - totally '70's , plastic and all. everyone should have at least one in their collection.

I've found that ebay USA has the best bargains for budget vintage LEDs. Most sellers don't charge excessive shipping costs but it's worth keeping an eye on these charges.

UK Customs don't seem that interested in low value items but will sting you big time if you start to import expensive items. Most sellers seem happy to label their parcels "used watch parts" which have never been subject to import charges in my experience.

Hope this helps.

It often cheaper to get a parcel sent from USA to france (6$ global priority mail) than from France to France (minimum price 6 euros = 8$)
But i think it's harder and harder to find a working led watch for a fair price , any working one even in a beat up case and even wrongly advertised rarely goes for under 40 $

Wittnauer Polara - £100 should get you a very nice example, with a hughes module they're reliable too. Available in Goldfill and stainless (less common & more expensive). Oh and Retroleds is being way way too modist here. Check out his site at www.retroleds.com and see what he's got for sale - it's a tiny tiny tiny tiny fraction of what he has available (just how many do you have Ed?) and he's only slightly more expensive than ebay and a damn site safer. No chance of being ripped off and any number of forum members will back me up on that one. Of course you could get a dress pulsar - they go for less than the P series and look very nice.

Reeeeaaaaaaly tempted by a birks but holidays are comin', holidays are comin', holidays are comin'.

Just remembered - if you like BIG watches try looking up a Majestyk on ebay - $99 if you're lucky and 3 yr guarantee from one of our esteemed members.

Well let's not scare, him too much, with the emphasis on "BIG". :) If you have a wrist size under 6.5 inches, it is...Although I'd put the emphasis on width. I still can't get over that girl (I won't say who she is and where she is from) with the 5.5 inch wrists, who did a review on it, and over stated how large it was. Yeah...With a wrist size like hers, definitely. :)

Thanks for the plug, BTW.

billy bunny uk: If you're looking for vintage watches only, I recommend the New Old Stock Commodore's that www.ledwatchstop.com is selling.

i must admit that like Fitron- the impending family holiday has curbed my willingness to buy recently, i have let pass quite a few tempting leds , i fancied a lovely Longines (and had a price in mind that turned out to be higher than the highest bid !) the two tone Longines that Ed bid on last time (the $2000 watch) is for sale again though i have other reservations about that watch now so probably wouldn't bid anyway this time, also my nearly 17 year old daughter is pushing for a car, i offered her an led instead but she said no ! Strange- todays teenagers :?

Keep in mind that if you buy for a fair price , the day you need money you can sell your watch and not loose to much or even win a little.
It's like a bank with a side button which lit red numbers.

Comps has a valid point - don't go overboard or else you'll kick yourself later - I'm still hurting over a £135 Bulova big block I bought in the early days. I'd be lucky to get half that with the dollar sinking so much :( Buy them to wear and love and you'll always get your moneys worth. Buy them to sell on and well, good luck. It's possible but I wouldn't recommend it unless you're really good. Oh and never ever buy the first one you see. Even the rarest models pop up on ebay with monotonous regularity. Get a feel for the prices first - then bid.

I've a 6 & 3/4" wrist - the Majestyk looks big/wide and lovely on my wrist and is my most worn watch. I want one in solid gold but it'll never happen - not with 3 kids and a wife anyway  . Have you checked out this site - it's a sister to this one.

www.ledwatches.net

If you can't find a watch in the photo section to like then it most likely doesn't exist. BTW why no M1/2 in the modern section. Jeff submit the photos man! Billy bunny do let us know what you get - we're always willing to give a view and love hearing about people's purchases.

(whispers) hey guys! Billy bunny thinks he can stop at 5 rofl.

So many watch display cases come in increments of 6 or 12.
5 would just look weird and lonely.

Oh we're talking the led watch photo site that Ed acquired. I see. :) I was thinking Mr. Fitron meant here on this site.

Ok, will do Ed.

Why on earth would you need to submit photos to this site? You're on the banner! Pride of place no less right next to the sync.

I think Jeff's "Majestyk's", both versions, deserve to be on www.ledwatches.net, under "Photos - Modern" forever. It exists, it was a nice departure from others being offered, it wasn't just some fringe item. Someday it will be a "late vintage" item. 8)

Fit: Don't mind me. I didn't read your whole post since it was directed to BB-UK. I just happened to eye the part about how I should be posting my photos and thought you meant here at the Digital Watch Gallery and Reviews forum. :) I didn't see your link you left either. Anyway no biggie, right?

Ed: Thanks for the kind words.

I did look up the link but it was down at the time - I reported it, sorry I should have clarified that one. Laziness on my part.
