looking to buy a p2 - general advice needed

Post14 Nov 2007, 20:53

hi everyone! :)

first time posting, and first time vintage led watch seeking.

i am looking for a p2. im really looking forward to owning one of these. i did buy a fossil watch that was almost an exact copy of the p2, about 6 or so years ago. i thought it was great, but i lost it on a drunken night out not 3 months later! a little while after i watched live and let die.. and there was bond wearing the same style watch. i was gutted, and wanted my watch back so bad!!! i hadn't heard of or seen a p2 until a few days ago while searching for a long overdue replacement for the fossil watch. and i must say, im in love with the whole p2 history and style! ;) its a gem!

i live in london in the uk. where do you suggest is the best place to buy one in nice condition? is ebay my best bet? are there risk of fakes etc? maybe there are other more specialised auction sites or web sites that i can try?

thanks for any help people!!

Andy,

There are many good resources on the web. Some quick ideas would be:

See a post also in the Pulsar forum titled "A $6,500 Pulsar P2?" to contact CBank. Perhaps this watch will be re-listed on eBay and you can get in on it. Also view his incredible images of his collection on his site at: http://www.theledwatch.com/ledwatches.htm

One site that has a P2 for sale (Watch 1) is: http://www.planet-led.com/Home.htm

Also check in on LED Land: http://www.pulsarleds.com/

Also at Old Pulsars: http://www.oldpulsars.com/

Read and learn about Pulsars at: http://crazywatches.w.interia.pl/photo/ ... ed_p2.html

And also on our Moderator's site: http://thedigitalwatch.com/ (Be sure to investigate the Archive section)

Hope this helps with your quest!

Regards,

Mark A.

Be sure and make sure it's got a dot matrix, not bars or else it's been Frankensteined. Check out planet-leds #2 watch to see an example. Ebay's normally ok but follow the rule - buy the seller, not the item and be sure to tick completed items on the left hand side to see what they've been going for before bidding. Patience - P2's come up a lot. I love mine, you won't regret it. Just don't get too drunk when you're wearing it. That's what an Omega is for (well it is in my house anyway).

Once you get it post some pictures in the what you're wearing gallery.

i have been looking at the p2 on planet led. thinking of buying it.. its like $450. but not too sure as yet. will cost more coming into uk too.

you think its best to get something from ebay? there are none on right now, so im not sure what the price difference might be. but, if you say they are up all the time, i might just wait it out. :)

well steves p2 at planet-leds has been sold. so that option is out for me.

one thing i have been advised about is the everyday usage of a p2. if i bought one, i would want to wear it most days i think. is this ill advised considering the age of the watch? are they more for collectors and occasional dress wear?

Contact Ed ("retroleds"--the site admin) and see what he has. His site is www.retroleds.com
He may have something that's not listed on the site. Wouldn't hurt to drop an email to him.

If Ed's got something go for that - ebay is a lottery at best, especially if you're new to a particular item. You'll pay slightly more but at least you won't get ripped off on a POS. Quite easily to get done over on ebay...

thanks guys.

yeah... thats what i was worried about with ebay. wasn't too sure though.

the main thing then for me is, can you wear them as an everyday watch, or are they too fragile after 35 years?

if i buy one i dont want to have be extra carefull with it all the time. i just want to use it as a normal watch.

if this is the case then i will have to look at another type of watch

Fragile? They were pretty well built if a bit crude by modern standards. Would I wear one as a daily - yes but I've too many watches to justify "only" wearing one. Having said that I work in a library so it's not too likely to get hard knocks - what do you do ? Or try this popular one.

A man's watch if ever there was one. (only kidding, my wrist is 6.75 and it's just dandy on it). Designed by one of our members.

yes, that certainly is a nice watch. i was checking it out the other day.

for now, im set on getting a p2 on my wrist... though the more i look around, the more i get excited about the different styles out there. i think i could be getting "the bug" so to speak.

well... ed might have a p2 for sale... im just waiting back from him. after i obtain that first vintage watch,i have a feeling i will be searching out for many more!!! ;)
