They are the same BUT sometimes the display comes on bright for a second. Seems to like when you connected the batteries after its been sitting for a bit. When you first install them (doing it they I did to test the reed above) the display will pop on bright (usually only the seconds) and then go dimmer. After that happens once, it rarely happens again until it sits for a bit.
Could be that there is a funky connection somewhere but who knows. Was concerns me is the fact that the display for the seconds all light up with actual time just being a bit brighter. Thats strange.

Sounds like it may have a light sensor issue too.
I suggest contacting retroleds......he can probably help you out with a repair.
