Can anyone help me identify this watch?

Post07 Jun 2010, 15:40

Hello all,
I'm the new guy here, and I was told that you folks here are the premiere place to be for LED watch info, so I wanted to give you a shout and see if you can help me out!

I've got a question about a certain watch that I have not been able to have answered, although I've searched high and low for clues. The watch in question was used by the actor Dan Aykroyd in the 1980 movie, The Blues Brothers, and worn by his character, Elwood Blues. I have been told it was a Timex model, but it doesn't look like any versions I've seen in my searches; I have a Blues Brothers costume impression, and I've been looking to find one to buy to complete my costume. To date though, I've had no luck.

Here are a few screen snaps of the watch in question (sorry for the quality--it's all I have for reference); there is very little reference data available anywhere:

Anything you can help me with will be GREATLY appreciated...it will make me the envy of my fellow Blues Brothers fans if I can get it identified...then, I'll only have to find one to buy it!

Thanks,
Rob

Rob:
Using the 2nd and 5th pictures, I think it is a case very similar to this one http://www.retroleds.com/Items/wa302.htm In those pictures it appears that the case is not round, as the distance from the screen to the corner is obviously not the same as from the screen to the side. Some of the shots look like a different watch, but i understand you are doing your best to grab screen shots.

FUnny, on the cover of the soundtrack album(bro's seating on hood of car, Dan wearing part of handcuff on left wrist so watch is off), John Belushi is wearing what appears to be a digital watch, possibly even the same watch from the band and case styling. THere are also brief glimpses of that watch when Dan is blowing harmonica.

Thanks for that link! That particular one look closer than others I have found...

Funny you should mention those points, especially the poster image. Elwood always wore his watch on his right wrist, except in the 8th pic above (the Carrie Fisher/M-16 tunnel scene) where he has it on his left wrist; in the poster, he's apparently not wearing it at all.

There has been some discussion that the watch Jake wears is the Timex 994802 SSQ....it's been suggested also (like your link) that Elwood's was a Quartzmatic...

...but the case looks too small (to me, at least)...

Also (in the movie shots), the band looks to have been replaced, as the watch is gold-tone, and the band appears silver....

Rob:
That is actually a fairly big case - a good 25%+ bigger than any Timex. The watch not having the Quartzmatic logo on the screen means little, as those crystals, being plastic, were commonly replaced. The silver band with the brassy case made it "two toned". I can set you one up to look pretty much exactly like that, using all vintage parts.

How about this Datatime (Hong Kong cheapo)- case is actually bright gilt like the one's in your pix. Doesn't work, happy to donate it to good cause :-D

You will have to find your own Spiedel expanding bracelet for it.

Hi Rob

No offence but..

having seen you in 'uniform'..

..might you be better off growing some sideburns and taking on the John Belushi character ? You could then forget about the watch. ;-)

Cheers

Whoa....guys...I'm still here! Been working out-of-town lately, chasing the almighty dollar, you know.... ;-) ...and, I forgot to set my email thread reply notification option!

No offense taken, James.... :-D ...my wife said the same thing! My body shape actually dictates me being a better "Jake" than an "Elwood".... 8-)

That last still image Klippie posted looks close, but I don't see the "rough" finish on the watch body that is on the Mintron in that link he provided....Elwood's watch face looks smooth, not textured... :?:
