Klippie has nailed it - kind of pos modules that were very unprotected from battery acid. Don't be discouraged, but avoid those. You were right on the history - they were late to the game, and only there for the money. So they schlocked out crap.

Contrast this with the equally cheap, but much earlier Collins modules - made in Hong Kong, but well protected with rubber over the whole display. It's like condoms, your whole life can be changed by a few cents worth of rubber.
